Messers is a residential enclave in southern New Hampshire

Tucked into a corner of the New Hampshire state line, Messers is a quiet community bordered on two sides by Massachusetts. The New Hampshire enclave is split by the World’s End Pond, contrary to its name a serene body of water popular with anglers and boaters, but is otherwise largely residential surrounding it. “People can easily get from Messers to Haverhill where the train is, where the stores are, where everything is, but you just don’t feel like you’re in the city,” says Andrea Delahunty, a Realtor licensed in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts with Lamacchia Realty. Messers’ primary draw lies in that proximity to commercial corridors, including the Tuscan Village Mall and South Broadway, and commuters’ ability to travel less than 40 miles to Boston. Recreational amenities also lie nearby, including a course where golfers can play one round of golf across two states.

Single-family homes in the New Hampshire countryside

Messers consists almost entirely of single-family properties, though homebuyers have a variety of architecture to choose from. “There’s definitely a mix,” Delahunty, who grew up in nearby North Salem, says. “You have colonial-style homes and split-levels, but not really one particular style. Just a blend of everything.” Ranch-style homes and raised ranches can also be found in Messers. Most single-family homes cost between $500,000 and $800,000. “The neighborhood has bigger acreage and lot sizes,” Delahunty says. The neighborhood has yet to receive a CAP Index crime score.

Salem School District educates the Messers area

Kids in the Messers area are typically served by the Salem School District, which earns a B-plus from Niche. William T. Barron Elementary School also receives a B-plus, as does the Woodbury School, which spans grades six through eight. Salem High School gets a B. The district offers Salem Performing Arts, which features programs like strings, band and theater arts.

Expansive shopping at Tuscan Village

Broadway and surrounding shopping centers serve as commercial destinations for Messers. Thai Chili sits close to the state line near the south end of Messers, but farther up Broadway diners can find more international options at Kashmir Indian Cuisine or Trattoria Amalfi. Other spots include Shaking Seafood and Balducci’s Wood Fired Pizza. Tuscan Village is the primary shopping destination of the area, less than 5 miles from central Messers. Retailers there include Nike, L.L. Bean and Pottery Barn, alongside more than 50 other stores and restaurants. Downtown Haverhill, across the state line, is less than 10 miles away. “Haverhill has a great downtown with a lot of Italian restaurants,” Delahunty says. “It’s all walkable and a great area to live in.” Shoppers have an Aldi in southern Messers and a Walmart less than 5 miles southeast.

Residents are close to events in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts

In addition to serving as a shopping hub, Tuscan Village also puts on events for the community. A fall concert series takes place across September and October each year, while movie nights are also held at the mall. Other events include Countryfest and Barktoberfest. Just across the Massachusetts state line, Haverhill also puts on annual gatherings like fireworks on the Fourth of July and the Annual VFW Santa Parade, which has taken place for over 60 years.

Locals can play golf or go boating in Messers

Recreational amenities sit within and close to Messers. “They have a local golf course and walking trails,” Delahunty says. “It’s all right there. People can just walk to it.” Merrimack Valley Golf Club is open to the public and offers an 18-hole course straddling the state line between Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Michele Memorial Park has three baseball fields, several tennis courts and a playground. World’s End Pond spans nearly 100 acres and is popular for paddling and fishing. Other spaces include William Valentine Memorial Park, the Cluff Road Wetland and the Eleanor Street Wetland.

Messers is nearly equidistant from Boston and Concord

Interstate 93 is accessible under 5 miles from central Messers, while Interstate 495 is nearly 10 miles east. “The area is close to highway access, so everybody loves that,” Delahunty says. “A lot of them work in Boston, so they can get on the highway really quick.” No public transportation is available within Messers, but Merrimack Valley Transit has bus stops along South Broadway and Haverhill’s train station is under 10 miles away. Holy Family Hospital – Methuen sits around 5 miles away across the state line. Boston Logan International Airport is less than 40 miles from the neighborhood.
