Quiet streets line North Salem in New Hampshire

Residential streets flank New Hampshire Route 111 in North Salem, a neighborhood close to the Massachusetts border in the southeastern regions of the Granite State. The community is valued for its tranquility, where large, wooded lots sometimes offer an acre or more of land surrounding sprawling, custom, colonial-style homes. “Honestly, it’s just peace and quiet,” says Andrea Delahunty, a Realtor licensed in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts with Lamacchia Realty who grew up in the area. “It’s where buyers would go to get away from the city and busyness – to feel a little more remote.” North Salem is also close to Arlington Pond and the mysterious “Stonehedge,” but despite the distance from those busier areas, it is still a quick drive from Salem proper and the Tuscan Village shopping mall. “Salem has grown immensely from the small town that I had when I grew up,” Delahunty says. “It has become a city. There is lots to do.”

Spacious homes on sizable acreage in North Salem

North Salem is mostly residential, and residents have space between properties. “Homes are on the newer side,” says Delahunty. “You don’t see a lot of neighborhoods. The homes are more spread-out and are custom, bigger colonial-style homes.” Along with those colonial-style homes, which make up most of North Salem’s housing stock, the neighborhood also has some ranch-style homes and Cape Cods. Prices vary and inventory is low, but homes typically sell for between $700,000 and $1 million.

Education via the Salem School District

Kids in North Salem are served by the Salem School District, which earns a B-plus rating from Niche. North Salem Elementary School receives an A-minus and Woodbury Middle School has a B-plus. Salem High School gets a B and in 2008, Sports Illustrated named it the best high school athletics program in the state, thanks in parts to the school’s 82 state championships.

Outdoor recreation in town forests near Salem

Arlington Mill Reservoir is one of the area’s largest recreational sites, spanning over 260 acres just south of North Salem. “Arlington Pond is really popular,” Delahunty says, referring to the body of water by its local name. “People like to fish and it’s really popular for boating, snowmobiling, ice skating and ice fishing.” Windham Town Forest offers trails, panoramic views and an abandoned steam-shovel excavator. The Salem Town Forest encompasses nearly 350 acres closer to town and allows hiking, biking and horseback riding, as well as snowshoeing and skiing in the winter. America’s Stonehenge, also known as Stonehedge, is a tourist attraction of mysterious origin just east of North Salem. “Stonehedge is a big draw to North Salem,” Delahunty says.

Expansive shopping at Tuscan Village

Residents usually head outside of North Salem to find restaurants. Ayasofia Mediterranean Restaurant offers international fare on East Broadway. Locals can head up state Route 111 for more options, including frozen treats at Moo’s Place Homemade Ice Cream and Italian dishes at On the Corner Grill. Tuscan Village is a shopping hub less than 10 miles away with more than 50 stores and restaurants. “It’s just like a little city within itself,” Delahunty says. “It’s amazing and a big draw. Tuscan has changed Salem.” Shoppers can also find Aldi, Walmart and Target, all within 10 miles of the neighborhood.

Drivers use state Route 111 and Interstate 93 to get around

New Hampshire Route 111 bisects the neighborhood and links North Salem with Windham , where drivers can get on Interstate 93 less than 5 miles away. “North Salem is a little more out of the way, but it’s still easy,” Delahunty says. “It’s easy to get to, just feels a little more remote.” I-93 also runs down into Boston , which sits about 40 miles south. Drivers need their own cars to get around, as there is no public transit in North Salem. Parkland Medical Center is under 10 miles away. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which primarily offers airline destinations on the East Coast, is about 20 miles away.

Events take place at Tuscan Village just south

Most local events occur outside of North Salem, typically at Tuscan Village. It hosts a fall concert series, movie nights and multiple festivals, along with a Holiday Shoppes village around Christmas. Other festivities include fireworks for the Fourth of July. “They do all kinds of events at Tuscan,” Delahunty says. “People from North Salem go into Salem and to Tuscan.”
