Salem’s growth blends residential charm with retail appeal
Located 35 miles from Boston, the neighborhood of Salem Center blends suburban comfort with urban convenience in the town of Salem, New Hampshire. “Salem is a bedroom community for Boston because it’s right off Interstate 93 and just over the border,” says local Realtor and resident Jim Harvey of Keller Williams Realty Metropolitan. “It’s a popular spot for commuters who want a quieter life about an hour from what Boston has to offer.” Salem Center offers a family-friendly atmosphere within its residential pockets, and comparatively lower taxes than Massachusetts add to its appeal. Over the years, Salem has evolved from a quiet residential area into a vibrant regional commercial hub. The town’s growth and development, most notably with the introduction of the Tuscan Village, has spurred Salem into becoming a dynamic destination for shopping, dining and recreational experiences. “It’s transformational in many ways,” Harvey says. “The Tuscan development is a pretty concentrated landmass, but it offers an awful lot and has become a regional draw.”
Salem Center includes older homes and newer builds
A collection of residential pockets make up Salem Center, with a mix of subdivisions ranging from ranch-style homes and split-levels built in the 1940s and 50s to newer developments from the early 2000s with larger neo-colonial and New Traditional styles. “Depending on age, there are a lot of raised ranches and split-level homes, and in the 80s more colonials and contemporary styles were being built,” Harvey says. Prices for single-family homes typically start around $340,000 and range to $615,000; newer homes and those with more square footage can range from $650,000 to $1.27 million. Condos round out the housing mix, typically costing between $250,000 and $890,000, depending on amenities and size.
Public schools rated B or B-plus serve Salem Center families
Students may attend schools within the Salem School District, which earns a B-plus from Niche and serves just over 3,500 students across the town. Kids may begin at William E. Lancaster School, rated a B, or William T. Barron Elementary, rated a B-plus. Middle schoolers can advance to Woodbury School, which earns a B-plus, before matriculating to the B-rated Salem High School. The high school provides academic and athletic programs, with several "Career Pathways" options available through its Career and Technical Education Center. These pathways include communications, education, STEM and business.
Rail trail and town forest provide miles of hiking and biking
Salem offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Field of Dreams is a favorite local park, featuring a spacious wooden playground, scenic walking and fitness trails, and a stage that hosts summer concerts and movie nights. Michele Memorial Park is a hub for its athletic facilities, which includes baseball fields, tennis and pickleball courts, a playground, and a large open field for soccer. Hedgehog Park provides a swimming area, a smaller playground, picnic tables and a skate park, along with a few nature trails. Trails abound at Salem Town Forest, a sprawling, dog-friendly 200-acre park with 3.4 miles of wide hiking and biking trails. The Salem Rail Trail is another major destination for hikers; the multi-use trail stretches 5 miles through the length of Salem. “There’s also development in the depot area, which is the intersection of 28 and Main Street,” Harvey says. “Plans are in the works for a corner monument and additional public parking to serve the rail trail.”
Salem's growing commercial scene includes new Tuscan Village
Salem offers a vibrant scene for shopping and dining, with much of the town’s commerce centered along bustling Route 28. Shoppers can explore a variety of plazas and big-box stores, as well as The Mall at Rockingham Park, which features popular retailers like Macy’s, Talbots and Anthropologie. A variety of dining options are available, including traditional New England cuisine at The Copper Door and Italian favorites at Trattoria Amalfi. The newly developed Tuscan Village has brought a wave of growth to the area, introducing upscale restaurants such as The Capital Grille and creative ice cream flavors at Salt & Straw, along with convenient amenities like markets, medical offices and entertainment options, including a luxury cinema. Market Basket has three locations within a 2-mile radius along Route 28.
Interstate 93 and Route 28 connect Salem to Boston and beyond
Interstate 93 and Route 28 provide direct access for drivers and serve as major thoroughfares in the area, connecting commuters to Boston and other surrounding communities. Multiple Manchester Transportation Authority bus stops in the area also help residents get around town. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport offers domestic flights about 23 miles from Salem, and Boston Logan International Airport is about 35 miles south of the town. Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center, located in Tuscan Village, is the nearest medical center.
