Wheelers Mill in Salem is a historic residential area in the country
Wheelers Mill is a historic hamlet within the town of Salem, deriving its name from an old factory once owned by John W. Wheeler. The neighborhood’s history dates back to the early 19th century, when manufacturing arrived in town, and industrial mills were established in this area. Although no longer operational, these mills laid the foundation for what is now a rural, residential area, where homes sit on spacious lots filled with greenery and mature trees. Wheelers Mill is adjacent to the Arlington Mill Reservoir, a large body of water that once powered the neighborhood's factories. The area is about 4 miles from Salem’s town center and 10 miles—or a 30-minute drive—from the city of Lawrence on the Massachusetts state line, which offers a larger variety of urban amenities and essentials for daily living.
20th-century homes on spacious rural lots
Despite the area’s historical nature, many of the standing homes in Wheelers Mill were built more recently in the late 20th century, particularly in the 1980s. Single-family homes encompass a diverse range of styles, including colonial-inspired homes, traditional builds, new construction and ranch styles. With a median lot size of 1 acre, most homes have ample space surrounding them, keeping them secluded from neighbors. Waterfront properties on Shadow Lake and Arlington Mill Reservoir are in high demand and typically have limited space. Housing prices range from about $350,000 for smaller builds to nearly $1 million for larger estates. Ackerman’s Retirement Park, located in the northern part of the neighborhood, features manufactured homes priced between $160,000 and $360,000.
