Vintage houses in a quiet Salem neighborhood
Homes in Highland are typically cottages or bungalows, many of which are over a century old. "Highland combines historic charm with modern convenience. Bordered by the Willamette River to the west, this walkable community features tree-lined streets and well-preserved homes dating back to the early 1900s in its designated Heritage district," says Tracey-Gaynair. The houses are packed on densely populated streets with sidewalks connecting the properties. Most homes have driveways, and some have detached garages, but attached garages are rare. The busy areas around Commercial Street and Fairgrounds Road tend to be noisy, but the center of the neighborhood is relatively quiet. Most homes in Highland cost between $300,000 and $550,000. Buyers should know the neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 6 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4.Outdoor recreation throughout Highland
Highland Park is a small neighborhood green space on Broadway Street, one of Salem's first eight parks. It has a playground that includes climbing structures, swings and slides. There is an open grassy field that can be used for soccer. The park's two tennis courts can be converted into six pickleball courts if residents bring their own nets. River Road Park is a larger space farther north with two soccer fields and basketball courts that can accommodate full-court or half-court play. The park also has a large playground, splash pad and picnic shelter.Local schools prepare Highland students for the future
Students might attend Highland Elementary School, rated a C-minus by Niche, and Parrish Middle School, rated a C. North Salem High School also gets a C and serves approximately 2,200 students. The school offers International Baccalaureate programs and a JROTC National Security program. Students can also take career and technical education classes in industries like engineering technology, culinary arts and cabinetmaking.Building neighborhood spirit in Highland
The Highland Neighborhood Association is a city-sponsored organization focused on outreach within the community. The group organizes several events each year, including National Night Out, block parties, neighborhood clean-ups and seasonal events. "We just had our Fall Festival in Highland Park. One of our members is a professional photographer, so people were able to come in costume and take pictures," says Coleman. "We also had crafts for the kids and fall-themed candy." The neighborhood regularly collaborates on events with Center 50+, a local senior center. These include a children's clothing swap and gifts for seniors. In addition to its events, the association has worked with the city on traffic safety improvements and created brochures on the neighborhood's history. It also maintains a community garden at the intersection of Hazel Avenue and Columbia Street, allowing residents to grow their own food in the neighborhood.Several ways to get around Salem
Highland is about 1.5 miles from the city center and has several ways to get around. "I like that it's close to downtown without having to be in downtown. It's pretty walkable and bikeable, too, if you don't want to drive or deal with parking," Coleman says. Several bike lanes and paths exist throughout the neighborhood, offering multiple options for getting around Salem. For those who prefer driving, downtown is a straight shot south on Broadway Street. Salem Hospital is about 3 miles south of the neighborhood via Front Street. Cherriots bus routes 9 and 19 also serve the neighborhood, offering public transit access to downtown and the nearby city of Keizer. For longer trips throughout Oregon, Interstate 5 is about 2.5 miles away.Gathering with neighbors at Highland establishments
Highland has several local restaurants offering a mix of atmospheres and cuisines. "F/Stop Fitzgerald's is a common place. It's a taphouse and they have beer and kombucha on tap. It's really intimate and set up like a house," says Celine Coleman, the secretary of the Highland Neighborhood Association. Slangers is a food cart in the parking lot of F/Stop Fitzgerald's, serving burgers and fries. Other local spots include Padington's Pizza, a Salem staple since 1978, and The Shack, a dive bar known for karaoke and pub food. The neighborhood is about 3.5 miles from Willamette Town Center, a large shopping mall with chain stores like Burlington and Barnes & Noble. Shopping within the neighborhood includes a Dollar Tree and Goodwill. Groceries are available at the Fred Meyer on Broadway Street.
