Quiet north Salem neighborhood near major thoroughfares
Named after a farmer who had an orchard on his land, Lansing is a small neighborhood in northern Salem that flies under the radar of most homebuyers. In fact, the location right next to Interstate 5 might put some buyers off from the neighborhood, but the noise from the highway doesn't come too far into the community. "It's just a quiet, friendly neighborhood," says Angie Millard, the owner of Heart & Soul Realty, who has a decade of experience in the area. "A lot of people don't realize it's a quiet neighborhood. If they're looking there, it's because they have family or work over there. It's kind of a hidden little area." In addition to the area's peacefulness, Lansing is close to schools, shopping and dining, making it a convenient place to call home in north Salem.
Easy access to Salem staples and national chains
The neighborhood's location near major streets like Silverton Road and Market Street allows for easy access to local shopping and dining. Kim Huong Vietnamese Restaurant is a family-run spot serving traditional Vietnamese food in a casual setting with plants adorning the walls. Pietro's Pizza is a casual spot full of family fun, with a mini golf course, laser tag and an arcade. Elmer's Restaurant serves classic breakfast food all day. Grocery stores across the interstate include Safeway, Fred Meyer and Walmart. Willamette Town Center is about 1.5 miles from the neighborhood and has stores like Burlington, Hobby Lobby and Nordstrom Rack, plus a Regal movie theater.
Established midcentury homes in a north Salem community
Lansing was developed following World War II, with many homes built in the 1950s and 1960s. Most houses in the neighborhood are minimal traditional or ranch-style homes, usually on lots between 6,000 and 8,000 square feet. Many have been added on to or remodeled over the years, with features like updated kitchens, bathrooms and flooring. Homes typically cost between $250,000 and $550,000. Trees like Douglas firs and maples dot the landscape, adding pops of color during the fall and providing shade in the summer. Most streets in the neighborhood don't have sidewalks, and many roads end in cul-de-sacs, resulting in low traffic. Buyers should know the neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 8 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. Lansing gets particularly high scores for property crimes.
Active and passive parks in Lansing
Two parks are located in the neighborhood, offering easy access to outdoor recreation. Lansing Park is a passive park with a large sports field, picnic tables and a walking path. Livingston Park is more developed and has a playground, basketball courts and a walking path that passes through tall shade trees. The neighborhood is just 3 miles from some of Salem's larger parks, like Riverfront Park downtown. This green space is on the banks of the Willamette River and has a playground, amphitheater and walking paths surrounding open grassy areas. Salem's Riverfront Carousel is an indoor carousel in the park with hand-carved horses and other animals.
Celebrating all that Oregon has to offer at the Expo Center
Living in Lansing makes it easy to experience some of Salem's largest events at the Oregon State Fair & Exposition Center. This 185-acre venue hosts the Oregon State Fair every August, bringing livestock, horse shows, carnival rides, live music and fair food to the area. It also serves as the site of the Marion County Fair each July. Other events hosted here include First Taste, a festival celebrating local wine, beer and food. The festivities continue in December with Holiday Village, which features a market, a drive-through light show and pictures with Santa.
Education options from kindergarten through college
Washington Elementary School, rated a C by Niche, and Waldo Middle School, rated a C-minus, are each located in the neighborhood. North Salem High School gets a C and has JROTC and International Baccalaureate programs. The school also offers career and technical education courses in industries like cabinetmaking, culinary arts and engineering technology. North Salem has been named a Grammy Signature School and has an award-winning band program. Chemeketa Community College is about 2.5 miles north of the neighborhood and has a variety of programs, including industry certificates, GEDs and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Leadership and Management.
Nearby thoroughfares make it easy to get around Salem

Plus, Salem Hospital is just 3 miles southwest of the neighborhood.
