Northeast Neighbors is a historic neighborhood near downtown Salem
Northeast Neighbors is a residential neighborhood in central Salem that sprang up following the 1870s completion of the Salem-Portland rail line. Many of the homes, churches and schools that its original residents built in the following decades remain a part of the neighborhood, providing a historic ambiance and a sense of longstanding community. "It's located near the heart of Salem, and you've got the I-5 right on the other side, so it's incredibly convenient," says Realtor and Salem native Alex McCarthy of John L. Scott Real Estate.
Early-20th-century bungalows
The neighborhood’s residential developers laid out a gridded street pattern full of lots varying in size from 4,700 square feet to 8,000 square feet. Historic homes can be found throughout the neighborhood. It’s full of quaint Craftsman homes and charming bungalows,” says McCarthy. “You really get a sense of the history of the city, living in this area.” Midcentury homes filled the neighborhood's vacant lots in the decades after World War II. Most homes in the neighborhood sell for between $330,000 and $430,000.
