Salina

Salina

Salina is a lakeside suburb just north of Syracuse

Salina sits on the eastern edge of Onondaga Lake just outside Syracuse in central New York. Back in the 19th century, the town's location on the Erie Canal helped spur its growth as salt production stimulated the economy. In fact, “Salina” is derived from the Latin word for salt. Today, the Syracuse suburb is made up of five smaller communities — Galeville, Liverpool, Lyncourt, Mattydale and a portion of North Syracuse — and education and health care replaced salt-making in the economic engine.

Housing options range from 1800s farmhouses to contemporary homes

You’ll be able to choose from a variety of housing styles in Salina, ranging from 1800s Nationals to midcentury ranch-style homes to modern contemporary houses. It’s possible to get a fixer-upper for under $100,000, but stylish modern homes and sprawling farmhouses sell in the mid-$500,000 to mid-$600,000 range. Some houses in Liverpool and Galeville offer views of Onondaga Lake. “This area is actually booming,” says Susan Li, a licensed real estate broker with Coldwell Banker Prime Properties who has over 20 years of local experience. “The market here is on fire.”

Garages and roof rakes come in handy during snowy winters

Winters in central New York are long, cold and snowy. The Syracuse area averages over 100 inches of snow per year, and winter daytime highs rarely climb past the 30s. “Winter here is almost six months — November to April, sometimes to Mother’s Day,” Li says. Roof rakes are common household tools. Homes built after 1950 typically include enough garage space for one or two vehicles, but if you buy an older house, you might spend a lot of time brushing snow off your car. All that snow can lead to longer commute times, too.

Highly rated school districts serve the Salina area

Depending on their address, students might attend schools in one of three highly rated districts:

  • Liverpool Central School District, known for its outstanding music and athletics programs
  • East Syracuse Minoa School District, where the Youth Development and Leadership Team encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities
  • North Syracuse Central School District, which offers a variety of supplementary educational programs, including career ed

Local hospitals and colleges provide plenty of jobs

A lot of residents work at the local school districts or nearby colleges. “Our major employers here are medicine and education,” Li says. “Med and ed create jobs.” Syracuse University is about 10 minutes away, and so is SUNY Upstate Medical University and its affiliated health care center, Upstate University Hospital. Le Moyne College and Onondaga Community College, both in Syracuse, are about 15 minutes away. The Amazon Fulfillment center and Lockheed Martin plant provide more job opportunities right in Liverpool. Also of note: Micron, a tech company, is investing $100 billion in a semiconductor plant in nearby Clay. The first phase of operations should start around 2030.
