Living near El Dorado Park and North Salinas High
Harden Ranch is a suburban neighborhood with parks, schools and shopping located within its bounds. Wide, paved suburban streets lined with sidewalks are dotted with ranch-style homes and two-story Mediterranean-influenced properties underneath palm trees. “I wouldn’t say everyone knows everyone, but people are always out waving to one another and saying, ‘good morning,’ which is nice,” says Veronica Rubio of RE/MAX Property Experts, who has over a decade of experience in the area. “It’s a place where you feel comfortable letting your kids walk to El Dorado Park or North Salinas High.” People here can walk from one house to the next, and the neighborhood is just across North Main Street from Northridge Mall, the only major shopping center in Salinas. It’s also less than a mile from Route 101, which provides quick access to the Bay Area. “One other appealing thing about Harden Ranch is that you’re getting newer homes compared to much of West Salinas,” says Rubio. “They may be from the late 1990s or early 2000s, but that’s as new as it gets on this side of town.”

Mediterranean-style homes
The houses in Harden Ranch range from large Mediterranean-inspired houses with more than 3,000 square feet to mid-sized Craftsman homes to ranch-style houses with around 1,000 square feet. Prices for older, one-story homes like ranch-styles range from about $600,000 to $800,000, depending on size and upkeep, while two-story homes built in the late 1990s and early 2000s cost between $735,000 and almost $1 million, depending on age and size. “The price point is higher than Creekbridge or some surrounding areas, but the lot sizes are also 1,000 to 2,000 square feet larger,” says Rubio. Most houses are on quiet roads ending in cul-de-sacs, and sidewalks link one property to the next. People park in driveways or multicar garages, and houses have fenced-in backyards.

Shopping at Northridge Mall
Residents can shop at Harden Ranch Plaza, which has a Safeway and Target for groceries and retail outlets like Marshall’s and Macy’s. Walmart, Lowe’s and other big box shops sit along East Boronda Road. “For people who like convenience, this is the spot to be,” says Rubio. “There just aren’t the large stores or chains in other parts of Salinas.” Northridge Mall has plenty of retail shops, a bowling alley and a movie theatre. Residents can sit at the bar or a sleek black leather chair at Arigato Sushi and eat a specialty roll. Seafood restaurant Crab Bucket has a nautical theme with fishnets on the walls and neon beer signs behind the bar. Popular national chains like Olive Garden and Habit Burger & Grill are located off North Main Street.

Outdoor fun at El Dorado Park
Harden Ranch’s largest park is El Dorado Park, a 17-acre green space with grills for picnics. The park also has a pair of basketball courts and softball fields, and tennis players can practice their serves on the courts while kids explore the playground. “El Dorado Park is the best in the area, and the city does a great job of maintaining it,” says Rubio. McKinnon Neighborhood Park is a pocket park with walking paths, green open space and a small playground. Residents can get a workout in at In-Shape Family Fitness, and Harden is a couple of blocks north of the Salinas Sports Complex, which has an arena and a large football stadium. It hosts sporting events, rodeos, concerts and monster truck rallies.
