A mall that's more than just shopping

In the agriculture community of Salinas, Northridge is best known as a retail destination. “People like that it’s close to shopping and dining, but is also just a 20-minute commute to the ocean,” says Beth Carbone, a RE/MAX Gold Realtor with nearly 20 years of experience in Monterey County. In Northridge, the mall isn’t just used for shopping. In 2023, it was a venue where residents celebrated their culture at The Hispanic Heritage Festival, which featured live music, folkloric dancing and face-painting. Because of the booming agricultural business, many farmers call Salinas home. Some farms, such as Borchard Farms, are open seasonally to the public for pumpkin-picking and corn mazes.

Hot on-the-market homes

Houses in Northridge tend to sell quickly as there are usually few on the market due to a lack of supply. Most houses here were built in the 1970s and ‘80s in the ranch style and sit on small lots in subdivisions. Sidewalks are shaded by trees throughout the neighborhood. Prices range from around $530,000 to $700,000, with updated homes on the higher end. Condos and townhouses are typically found in gated communities, with amenities like outdoor pools, and go from $250,000 to $560,000. Manufactured homes in 55-plus communities start at $100,000.

North Salinas High offers vocational opportunities like their health academy with classes such as Sports Medicine and Foundations of Nursing that help students progress into a CNA program. There are also career training programs in food services and computer sciences. North Salinas High receives a B-minus overall on Niche.

Many stores to be explored

The Northridge Mall is the largest mall in Monterey County. Since opening in 1974, its has been a staple for the area, bringing in millions of visitors every year. It features 130 stores such as Macy’s and Old Navy, a food court, bowling alley and movie theater. On main street, there are shopping centers with big-box retailers like Target scattered with fast-food and chain restaurants like Olive Garden. Groceries can be picked up at the Safeway or the Walmart Supercenter in nearby Westridge Plaza.

Accessible by sidewalks, streets and freeways

Adjacent to US 101, residents have access to the city of Monterey, known for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Pebble Beach. “Northridge has a lot of access to public transportation,” says Carbone. It’s a part of the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) where the 41 Northridge-Salinas via East Alisal route makes stops at the mall and the Natividad Medical Center.

Parks and The Tot Lot

A short drive from the mall, Northgate Park features a basketball court surrounded by grassy fields where new palm trees have been planted. The playground has two slides and plenty of objects to climb. For more recreational options, Northgate Tot Lot, a 6-minute walk away, has more playground equipment and a swing set.
