A recreational Salt Lake suburban area
East Bench is a suburban Salt Lake Valley neighborhood known for its recreation since it’s near the Wasatch Mountains, popular golf courses and Utah’s Hogle Zoo. Although it’s 5 miles east of downtown Salt Lake City, it has a similar lively feel, with walkable streets shaded by maple and pine trees. “East Bench is a super well-established neighborhood,” says Brian Babb, a Realtor with Equity Real Estate who has been selling homes in the area for nearly a decade. “But you’re going to hear lions roaring in the morning and evening since you’re so close to the zoo.” About 80 percent of residents are homeowners in the area; East Bench attracts families because it's filled with single-family homes, part of a well-regarded school district and close to the University of Utah. Families tend to stay put, which has caused the area to become a generational neighborhood.

East Bench sits at an elevation, so residents can see the surrounding mountains. Residences include a mix of condos, ranch-style homes and newly constructed contemporary houses. Condos cost between $400,000 to $1 million, depending on square footage, and 20th-century homes are priced between $900,000 and $3 million, depending on renovations and size. Newer builds range from $2 million to $5 million. Most homes have small porches, and lush, manicured lawns typically have space for personal gardens. Streets are lined with sidewalks, and people can park their vehicles on the paved driveways or in one-car garages.

Hiking to the Living Room trail
East Bench is near the mountains, so neighbors have plenty of outdoor recreation options. Popular hiking destinations include Jack’s Peak Trailhead, located in the southeastern corner of East Bench, and the Living Room Hiking Trail, a path 2 miles north that leads hikers to an open area full of rocks resembling couches. Jack’s Peak trail leads people to Jack’s Mountain Mailbox at the top, a memorial mailbox dedicated to a young boy named Jack, who lost his battle with leukemia in 1995. "A major plus of East Bench is its proximity to the mountains and the recreational opportunities and views that come along with that," says Wendy Wheeler, a Realtor with Summit Sotheby's International Realty, who's sold homes in Salt Lake City for more than two decades. Donner Trail Park is next to the local zoo, offering sweeping views of the Salt Lake Valley. Visitors can enjoy sunset while eating at picnic tables or playing on the playground. People also visit the park every Fourth of July for fireworks. Nearby Rotary Glen Park has trails, picnic tables and a dog park. The public Bonneville Golf Course is right outside the neighborhood; it has a nine and 18-hole layout, tennis courts and baseball fields. The Country Club has a private, 18-hole championship course 2 miles south. The University of Utah’s men's golf team competes here.
