It sits near the western corner of East Bench and is three blocks away from J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School, which serves preschool through middle school. Private school students can also attend Rowland Hall, a K-12 school that’s about a mile away. The public University of Utah is 1 mile away, while Westminster University is a private college 2 miles away. East Bench is near the mountains, so neighbors have plenty of outdoor recreation options. Popular hiking destinations include Jack’s Peak Trailhead, located in the southeastern corner of East Bench, and the Living Room Hiking Trail, a path 2 miles north that leads hikers to an open area full of rocks resembling couches. Jack’s Peak trail leads people to Jack’s Mountain Mailbox at the top, a memorial mailbox dedicated to a young boy named Jack, who lost his battle with leukemia in 1995. "A major plus of East Bench is its proximity to the mountains and the recreational opportunities and views that come along with that," says Wendy Wheeler, a Realtor with Summit Sotheby's International Realty, who's sold homes in Salt Lake City for more than two decades. Donner Trail Park is next to the local zoo, offering sweeping views of the Salt Lake Valley. Visitors can enjoy sunset while eating at picnic tables or playing on the playground. People also visit the park every Fourth of July for fireworks. Nearby Rotary Glen Park has trails, picnic tables and a dog park. The public Bonneville Golf Course is right outside the neighborhood; it has a nine and 18-hole layout, tennis courts and baseball fields. The Country Club has a private, 18-hole championship course 2 miles south. The University of Utah’s men's golf team competes here.Dinners and desserts at well-regarded spots
Harbor Seafood & Steak Co., a surf and turf spot with outdoor and indoor seating, is 2 miles south on Parley’s Way. Mumbai House is a popular Indian restaurant on the same street that serves classic dishes like butter chicken mushroom makhani. Here, meals are served on a trolley rather than trays. Foothill Village shopping center is within the neighborhood; it has Dan’s Market, the main local grocer. It also includes salons, a Starbucks and a yoga studio.Annual events at the Utah Hogle Zoo
People visit Utah’s Hogle Zoo for its animals, amusement rides and water park, Lighthouse Point Splash Zone. During the holidays, the zoo hosts an evening Christmas show called ZooLights where people can walk through animal-themed lighting displays. Foothill Drive forms the western border of East Bench; it connects to Interstates 80 and 215, which lead to downtown Salt Lake City and the south Salt Lake area. The Utah Transit Authority's bus line 4 has stops along Foothill Drive. There aren’t many bike lanes in East Bench; Instead, that space is used for street parking. Salt Lake City International Airport is 12 miles away, and the University of Utah Hospital is 1 mile north.Environmental concerns in East Bench
Because of the area’s arid climate and topography, it experiences wildfires and poor air quality. Wildfire season occurs from July to October, while polluted air can get trapped in the air at any time. The Utah Department of Air Quality constantly monitors the area’s inversion.
