The Avenues
Groceries from Smith's and coffee from Café on First
Neighbors who live in the Lower Avenues are in a prime location for walking to shopping destinations. Smith’s Food and Drug, on the corner of E Street and Sixth Avenue, has a full line of groceries. Just off Temple Square is City Creek Center, a shopping mall with a retractable roof and a stream running through the middle. There is no shortage of bars and restaurants downtown, but The Aves locals can also find restaurants right on their street. Avenues Proper is known for its craft brews and menu options like Truffle Mac & Cheese and Cauliflower Tacos. For dessert, diners can step next door to get hand-dipped chocolates from Hatch Family Chocolates. Cucina Wine Bar on Second Avenue offers a curated menu, complete with wine pairings. Coffee shops include Café on First, with a shaded outdoor patio, and Java Jo’s, which has a convenient drive-through.A mix of architectural styles in The Avenues
The Avenues Historic District has more than 100 architect-designed homes. “It’s a unique area,” Compton says. “There is such a wide array of architectural styles, from Art Deco to Federal, all mixed in with contemporary condos.” Condos start in the upper $300,000s, and single-family residences generally don’t list under $575,000. Bungalow, Victorian and Foursquare are the most prevalent styles; most were built between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Bungalows with two bedrooms, one bathroom and on-street parking are priced around $650,000 on average. Victorian and Foursquare choices may have three or more bedrooms and either a small driveway or a detached one-car garage. Buyers can expect prices between $750,000 and $900,000 for one of these homes. Sections of the neighborhood, such as Federal Heights and the Upper Avenues, offer multi-million-dollar options. Buyers can choose between renovated Victorians or contemporary-style places; many are equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows for taking in the valley views.Hiking City Creek Canyon and pickleball at 11th Avenue Park
Avenues residents have ready access to hiking trails and parks. City Creek Canyon offers paths leading to picturesque views of the Salt Lake Valley. Neighbors can enjoy a tennis or pickleball match at 11th Avenue Park or practice their batting skills on the baseball fields at Lindsey Gardens. In summer, several local bands put on concerts in Historic Brigham Young Park. Kids can enjoy indoor playtime at the Corinne and Jack Sweet Branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library. Winter recreation includes snowshoeing along trails or ice skating at the Gallivan Center downtown. Also, living in Salt Lake means that ski resorts like Brighton, Alta Ski Area and Deer Valley are all close by.Sundance Film Festival and other events
As the neighborhood borders downtown Salt Lake City, locals can easily access many festivals and events. The most notable is the Sundance Film Festival, which takes place in January each year. There are movie screenings at theaters around Salt Lake and in Park City, and the main event happens in Park City. There are also several annual parades through the downtown area, including Utah Pride’s festival in June and Pioneer Day in July. Each year, the Utah State Fair is held at the Utah State Fairgrounds — about 3 miles from The Aves.Experiential field trips at Salt Lake Center for Excellence Bryant
Local children may attend Ensign Elementary, which scores an A on Niche. It is on 12th Avenue, making it possible for many families to walk their kids to school if they wish. With all the nearby amenities, it is possible for some residents to avoid driving. The TRAX light rail station is on 900 East and Trolley Square, a few blocks from the Lower Avenues. Utah Transit Authority buses also run within the neighborhood, and they offer shuttles to nearby ski resorts, including Alta and Brighton. During major snowstorms, however, bus systems may be shut down temporarily. Those who need to commute for work may want a vehicle equipped with four-wheel drive and snow tires for navigating ice and snow. Salt Lake International Airport is about 7 miles west. It offers nonstop service to 90 destinations. Those who have an acute medical emergency can find a Level I Trauma Center at The University of Utah Hospital, about 2 miles away from The Avenues.Winter issues
