About San Angelo, TX

About San Angelo, TX

West Texas city known for its history and strong community

San Angelo's importance as a military stronghold dates to 1867, when it was established as an outpost for U.S. cavalry, infantry and the famed Buffalo Soldiers, Army regiments of African American soldiers. Today, Goodfellow Air Force Base, a fixture in the city since 1940, is home to over 5,000 active-duty military personnel and is San Angelo's largest employer. Other major employers include Shannon Medical Center, the San Angelo Independent School District and Angelo State University.

The population of this West Texas city is around 100,000, a figure that has held steady for the past decade. Residents are attracted to San Angelo's historic ambiance, riverfront recreation, cultural attractions and small-town feel. "When you're born and raised here in San Angelo and move away to Dallas or Houston, you always want to move back," says John Biera, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. "The community is so inclusive and welcoming. Everyone looks at you in the face, shakes your hand, and introduces themselves. It's great for small businesses because the community outreach is great. Everyone wants everyone to win."

Historic Downtown San Angelo is a hub of activity, starting from the River Walk, which runs along the Concho River, and stretching for several blocks north. Antique shops, boutiques and local restaurants dot the downtown streets, including Miss Hattie's Restaurant & Cathouse Lounge, set in an 1880s building that's one of the city's first permanent structures. "The entirety of San Angelo has amazing food," Biera says. "You step outside, pick a direction and you'll find a great place to eat." Big-box stores and chain restaurants are located along Sherwood Way, while Sunset Mall has over 60 retailers, including JCPenney.

In the Fort Concho neighborhood across the river from downtown is the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, with permanent and temporary exhibits and community art events. A block away is the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, once used to protect frontier settlements and is now a museum. The Concho Valley Farmers Market is nearby and is open three days a week, offering local produce and plants. Along the river is the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial Riverstage, with live concerts and Independence Day celebrations.
