Historic Downtown San Angelo, museums and the River Walk
Historic Downtown San Angelo is a hub of activity, starting from the River Walk, which runs along the Concho River, and stretching for several blocks north. Antique shops, boutiques and local restaurants dot the downtown streets, including Miss Hattie's Restaurant & Cathouse Lounge, set in an 1880s building that's one of the city's first permanent structures. "The entirety of San Angelo has amazing food," Biera says. "You step outside, pick a direction and you'll find a great place to eat." Big-box stores and chain restaurants are located along Sherwood Way, while Sunset Mall has over 60 retailers, including JCPenney.
In the Fort Concho neighborhood across the river from downtown is the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, with permanent and temporary exhibits and community art events. A block away is the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, once used to protect frontier settlements and is now a museum. The Concho Valley Farmers Market is nearby and is open three days a week, offering local produce and plants. Along the river is the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial Riverstage, with live concerts and Independence Day celebrations. Other venues for performances include the San Angelo Performing Arts Center, the Angelo Civic Theatre and the Murphey Performance Hall.

The 4-mile-long River Walk, which runs through downtown, features gardens, parks and areas for fishing; it also connects to the seasonal Love Municipal Pool.

Annual events include Downtown Strong
Brews, Ewes & BBQ is an annual event that includes a barbecue cookoff and a kids' cooking competition, with proceeds going toward revitalizing the downtown. Every October, the Downtown Strong event features local art and local food. The San Angelo Rodeo and Stock Show kicks off in February with a parade through downtown. Events take place at the fairgrounds and include professional rodeos and kid-friendly events.
