Dignowity Hill
Vintage homes with eye-catching exteriors
Late 19th-century and early to mid-20th-century homes line the neighborhood’s residential streets: “It’s like you’re stepping back in time,” Vallejo says, adding that properties with Victorian architecture and Craftsman homes are two commonly seen housing styles in Dignowity. Historic bungalows with Craftsman architecture often feature eye-catching, colorful facades and unique exterior finishings. “When you’re in this area, you can’t miss the vibrancy,” Vallejo says. Many of the older homes here have undergone internal renovations to accommodate modern living, but their exterior vintage characteristics remain intact and off-limits for reconstruction. There are a handful of newly built properties in this neighborhood, including some contemporary single-family homes and multifamily properties, such as townhouses and duplexes. Home prices tend to start around $200,000 and climb up into the $500,000s, although a handful of residences have sold for more than $700,000.Exercise outdoors at Lockwood-Dignowity Park
The site where Dr. Anthony Michael Dignowity’s “Harmony House” once stood over a century ago is now known as Lockwood-Dignowity Park, a local green space. Residents can go to the park to exercise at outdoor fitness stations or head to a designated dog park area separated into two parts to accommodate larger and smaller dogs. Located in the northeastern corner of Lockwood-Dignowity Park is Empower House, a non-profit organization that provides various community services and educational resources. Tennis and pickleball players can go to Fairchild Park to find an outdoor athletic court complex. Vallejo says that every January, the San Antonio MLK March in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. marches through the Eastside area and concludes at Pittman-Sullivan Park just south of Dignowity. The annual march is known to be the largest MLK Day event in the country and draws hundreds of thousands of participants.High praise for Dignowity Meats barbecue restaurant
Local restaurants are located throughout Dignowity and create a diverse culinary scene within the neighborhood. “Estate Coffee Company would have to be one of my favorites,” Vallejo says. “The Alamo Beer Company is also located right there in Dignowity.” A sizeable indoor/outdoor brewery, the Alamo Beer Company brings people together with live music and craft beer. Along nearby Austin Street, residents can find several other bars, including Burleson Yard Beer Garden and Brooklyn Bar. Located just off East Houston Street, Con Huevos Tacos is a small neighborhood taqueria known for its homemade tortillas and breakfast tacos. Called “one of the best restaurants in San Antonio” by a USA Today review, Dignowity Meats is a popular barbecue joint praised by food critics and customers alike. For grocery shopping, Vallejo says that locals typically go to H-E-B supermarkets.IDEA Carver charter school located in the neighborhood
Students in this neighborhood are zoned for the San Antonio Independent School District, which receives an overall C-plus rating from Niche. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade can attend Bowden Academy, a C-minus-rated school that recently underwent renovations. For a secondary institution, older students might head to the C-plus-rated G.W. Brackenridge High School, which offers a Media & Film Institute magnet program that has courses for everything from television and animation to computer science. IDEA Carver is a kindergarten through 12th-grade public charter school located in Dignowity; students are enrolled on a lottery-based system.Hays Street Bridge connects pedestrians to Downtown
“With access to nearby highways and main roads like Broadway, you can get anywhere in the city,” Vallejo says. Downtown San Antonio borders Dignowity to the west, with the two areas separated by Interstate 37, which travels north to connect with Interstate 35. Residents can walk across the highway into the downtown area using the Hays Street Bridge, which was built in the early 20th century: “The bridge is pedestrian-only, and it’s been in existence for quite some time,” Vallejo says. The Amtrak-operated San Antonio train station is situated only a couple blocks outside the neighborhood. VIA Metropolitan Transit operates bus lines throughout the area, including the East Commerce Frequent connecting to Downtown San Antonio.
