Living near Lackland AFB, 13 miles from Downtown
Translating from "window" in Spanish, La Ventana offers ranch-style houses with big picture windows and open backyards that accentuate natural light. This light shines on the library over Sun Valley Drive, a nearby hangout spot within walking distance. After school, the library's playground is filled with the neighborhood kids playing just close enough for parents to see them from the kitchen. “I know everybody here,” says Matthew Guzman, owner of Nappkn Pest and Home Services and community member for the last 10 years. “It’s a retirement area. It’s typically quiet except for the nearby air force base.” Sandwiched between Interstate 410 and Ray Ellison Boulevard, La Ventana still feels like a small community, even with the nearby Lackland Air Force Base bringing in changes and growth. And with the neighborhood school right there, it's no surprise to see kids walking back and forth, adding to the neighborly vibe.
The neighborhood is close to several major highways, making it easy to get around.
Lackland AFB is a staple of East San Antonio which many active or retired veterans call home.

Split between Southwest ISD and Northside ISD
Families may be part of the Southwest Independent School District or Northside ISD. “The school systems are good. Students within Southwest ISD may attend Sun Valley Elementary and Scobee Middle, both rated with C-plus according to Niche. Southwest High School earns a B-minus and is an Early College High School, allowing eligible students to earn college credit in Cybersecurity and Pre-Nursing. Those attending Northside ISD may attend B-minus rated Valley Hi Elementary and Jay High School, along with B-rated Rayburn Middle. Students at Jay High School can take Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses and earn industry-based certifications through Career Technical Education programs. Access downtown with US 90.

San Antonio is known as Military City, USA
The city is home to four major military bases: Randolph AFB, Lackland AFB, Camp Bullis and Fort Sam Houston, which together form Joint Base San Antonio. La Ventana is next to the Lackland Airforce base, known as "The Gateway to the Air Force." The facility is the only location in the country where basic military training is undergone for persons enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. In 2021, it is estimated that the Joint Base San Antonio accrued $39.2 billion dollars, affecting the economy and supporting 211,213 jobs. Living next to an Air Force base has its cons, meaning traffic in the morning and the sounds of planes.
