Prospects are high for Prospect Hill
Commonly referred to as the West Side, Prospect Hill is a San Antonio neighborhood with a strong history of Hispanic culture. Cut off from downtown by the construction of highways in the 1960s, the area saw a decline. In recent years, though, the vibrant community has seen new interest. “It’s a neighborhood that’s being renewed,” says local Realtor Joselynn Lara with Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper Realtors, who works in the area. “It has a nice park nearby and is not far from downtown. There are also all kinds of grocery stores, shopping and restaurants.” Driving along the neighborhood streets, homebuyers will smell the aromas of Mexican food from restaurants that have been serving the community for decades. Local markets and shops offer Mexican grocery items and traditional clothing. Cultural centers showcase traditional and contemporary art from Latino and Native American cultures in the neighborhood.
Ingram Park Mall can be less than a 15-minute drive for Prospect Hill residents.
Drive-in tacos and convenient grocery stores
Prospect Hill has several popular and highly-rated local restaurants like Ray’s Drive Inn. This family-owned restaurant claims to be the home of the original puffy taco, a staple of San Antonio cuisine. Opening as a drive-in theater in 1956, the restaurant is known for its tacos, enchiladas and hot dogs. Yatzil Mexican Restaurant is another popular spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Locals enjoy the barbacoa and breakfast tacos at this colorful casual eatery. Living in Prospect Hill gives residents easy access to groceries, with an H-E-B located at the northern end of the neighborhood along Culebra Road. There is another H-E-B in the neighborhood’s southeastern corner on North Rosillo Street.
Cherishing the arts
The Guadalupe Community Center is a nonprofit organization that promotes and preserves traditional and contemporary art through various programs. The center hosts dance and music classes and events such as film festivals and art competitions. San Anto Community Arts Center is another neighborhood nonprofit that shares the culture of the community through murals painted around the city.
Cottages and ranch-style homes
Most of the homes in Prospect Hill are cottages or ranch-style homes. “They’re mostly traditional homes, typically with two or three bedrooms,” Lara says. “The affordability of the neighborhood makes it great for first-time homebuyers.” Homes often have wood siding, but some have stone or brick facades. Some houses throughout the community have spacious front porches. Houses are typically built close together on the city streets, adding to the neighborhood’s urban feel. Driveways are standard, but garages are rarely found throughout the neighborhood. Mature trees are planted throughout the area, stretching their limbs over the roads and sidewalks to provide shade. Homes typically cost between $200,000 and $250,000 for three bedrooms. Four-bedroom homes can cost up to $300,000.
