An evolving San Antonio neighborhood with plenty of offer
St. Paul Square residents have a front-row seat to watch as history is revitalized in the neighborhood. Many older buildings have been turned into condos, and historical homes have been renovated with modern amenities. Residents of this small community just a short distance from downtown have easy access to nearby shopping and popular destinations for nightlife and dining. "You're walking distance to the Alamodome and minutes from downtown," says Maudel Hardie, a San Antonio native and broker with Hardie & Associates. "It's a fast-growing area that has recently been coming to people's attention thanks to its accessibility and proximity. And a lot of older homes are being renovated as a result." Residents here benefit from easy access to shopping and dining along Commerce Street, lined with several popular restaurants. The Alamodome hosts large-scale events throughout the year that bring excitement to the community. And with downtown just a short drive or bus ride away, residents are never far from all that San Antonio has to offer.
Historical homes and contemporary condos
The streets of St. Paul Square are densely populated with homes that include condos, single-family houses and apartments. Many single-family homes are inspired by Victorian design and have been recently renovated with updated bathrooms, kitchens and paint. There are also several Craftsman and bungalow homes throughout the neighborhood. The condos in the neighborhood are a mix of renovated high-rise buildings and relatively new townhouse developments. Single-family houses range in price from $290,000 to $415,000, while condos and apartments can cost between $330,000 and $625,000.
Local restaurants bring the flavor
Plenty of local restaurants within this neighborhood offer an array of culinary options. Toro Kitchen + Bar is a Spanish restaurant specializing in tapas with a well-rounded wine list. Locals can head up to Crockett Street for Smoke Texas Downtown. The flagship location for this regional barbecue chain, this restaurant has unobstructed views of the San Antonio skyline along with an upbeat atmosphere. Live DJs are featured daily, and residents can eat and socialize in a spacious outdoor area. When it comes to cooking at home, St. Paul Square residents will have to head east of the neighborhood to the H-E-B near the corner of Houston Street and New Braunfels Avenue, about 1.5 miles from the community. There is also a Walgreens and a Wells Fargo branch in this area.
Year-round entertainment in St. Paul Square
The Alamodome is a defining feature of the neighborhood. The arena opened in 1993 and is the former home to the NBA's San Antonio Spurs. It currently serves as the home field for the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners and hosts the annual Valero Alamo Bowl. Residents can also attend events such as WWE, Monster Jam, Disney on Ice and concerts by A-list musical artists. The historic Southern Pacific Railroad station has been revamped into an event space and bar, hosting intimate concerts and private events. The 1902 nightclub pays homage to the station's history as it's named after the year it was built. Residents can head to the club on the weekends to see live DJs and enjoy a cocktail from one of the bars inside.
Preparing San Antonio students for the future
Students in St. Paul Square can attend Frederick Douglass Elementary School, which first opened in 1915. The school is rated a C-minus by Niche and offers a gifted and talented program, robotics, coding and an art club. Bowden Academy is a K-8 option named after Artemisia Bowden, an African-American school administrator and civic leader. Also rated a C-minus, the school offers bilingual programs, band, gardening and a reading club. Brackenridge High School was founded in 1917 and named after George Washington Brackenridge, a philanthropist, women's advocate and the longest-serving Regent for the University of Texas. The school is rated a C-plus by Niche and serves approximately 1,500 students. Brackenridge High offers an Early College High School Program where students can earn up to 60 college credits at no cost.
An array of recreation options
For some recreation, residents can stop by Cherry Street Park, a small urban park with a playground and benches shaded by mature trees. This pocket park also has a pavilion and picnic table perfect for an afternoon lunch. Fairchild Park is less than 1 mile northeast of the neighborhood and has several recreational facilities, including multiple tennis and pickleball courts and a playground. Pittman-Sullivan Park is about 1.5 miles east of the community and features a walking trail and baseball field. The Davis-Scott Family YMCA next to the park offers programs like exercise classes, swimming and youth sports. Just across Interstate 37 is Hemisfair, a large park with several museums, walking trails and the Tower of the Americas, a 750-foot tower with an observation deck that offers 360-degree views of the city.
Ease of access around San Antonio
With Interstate 37 on the neighborhood's west side, St. Paul Square residents will have an easy start to any commute around San Antonio. There is also an Amtrak station near the Alamodome just north of Montana Street. Several bus stops along the main streets in the neighborhood make it easy for residents to get around the city using public transit, providing routes in all directions.
