Developed community neighboring Lackland Air Force Base

Far West San Antonio is now one of the fastest-growing parts of the city, and Westwood was one of the first neighborhoods in the area to quickly develop nearly 60 years ago. A housing boom arrived in the neighborhood in the 1960s in response to service members being stationed at the nearby Lackland Air Force Base. Westwood is also a convenient place for employees of the massive Southwest Research Institute, which is less than 2 miles to the north. The region’s connecting hiking trails, locally owned restaurants, and quick access to attractions like Nelson Wolff Stadium and SeaWorld San Antonio guarantee entertainment outside of work as well. “There’s tons of new construction, and it’s just booming,” says Jonathan Welch, a real estate agent with Alamo City Living who lives in Far West San Antonio. “This is an amazing area to be if you’re looking to be in an up and coming, developing side of San Antonio.”

One of Far West Side’s most established neighborhoods

While much of the Far West Side is rapidly developing with new builds, Westwood is filled with well-established homes. Most of the properties in the area are ranch-style homes constructed between 1960 and 1970, and the long-standing neighborhood has mature landscaping that fills the area with tidy gardens and lots of shade. Because housing in the area is in such demand, there are few free lots, and almost all available homes are built close together on small plots of land. The average price of a Westwood property ranges between $150,000 to $250,000, lower on average than homes closer to the city center. The area has a CAP Index Crime Score of 5, on par with the national average score of 4.

Dinner and a show at Mina and Dimi’s Greek House

The Far West Side is one of San Antonio's fastest-growing areas, and many convenient business districts have emerged in the neighborhood over the past decade. West Lakes shopping center off Interstate 410 consists of big box stores like H-E-B and some chain restaurants. Gateway Plaza off U.S. Route 90 has some small shops, but it is mainly filled with locally owned restaurants like Mina & Dimi’s Greek House. This traditional Greek tavern serves heavy platters of lamb, beef and chicken in a vibrant dining room decorated with bright murals. It is also not uncommon to see live performers and belly dancing during peak dinner hours.

Local trailheads connect to the Leon Creek Greenway

Tom Slick Park, on the northern side of the Westwood area along the Raymond E. Stotzer Jr. Freeway, is one of the neighborhood’s largest green spaces. A walking trail loops around the park’s small ponds, and a dog park is also available for pet owners. Rodriguez County Park on the east side of the community is filled with facilities for basketball, tennis and soccer, and also has two trailheads for the Leon Creek Greenway. One of these trails connects directly to Levi Strauss Park, which is just across the Enrique M. Barrera Parkway. Rodriguez County Park and Levi Strauss Park are both a short walk from the Nelson W. Wolff Stadium on U.S. Route 90. This venue is home to the San Antonio Missions baseball team, a minor league affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

Major highways in and out of San Antonio’s “loops”

Westwood is close to three major arteries within the San Antonio metroplex – Southwest Loop 410, Texas Highway 151 and U.S. Highway 90. There are also daily VIA Metropolitan Transit bus routes on Highway 90, which skips over some of the heavier traffic on San Antonio’s loop routes. “We have highways that lead straight to the middle of town, so you don’t have to drive over the big loop and can get wherever you need to go in about 30 minutes or less,” says Trevor Yannutz, a real estate agent with Alamo City Living who has lived in Far West San Antonio since 20202. For long-distance travelers, Westwood is located about halfway between San Antonio International Airport and Stinson-Mission Municipal Airport, which are both about 15 miles away.
