Cajon
Midcentury designs in an established San Bernardino neighborhood
“Cajon is a beautiful foothill community. It’s very established, and a lot of the neighbors have been there for 40 years. It’s the type of place where people will pull in your trashcans if needed, a really close-knit area,” Kathy Thomson, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services and nearly 20 years of real estate experience. “Cajon has a stable market, with homes selling quickly. People move here because homes hold their value.” The neighborhood is filled with detached single-family homes and apartment complexes. Midcentury houses, ranch-style homes and Spanish-inspired dwellings stand beside tree-lined streets, and the designs were chosen to keep the extreme desert temperatures outside instead of in. Nearly 63% of people own their homes, while 37% rent. The high percentage of renters is primarily due to the nearby California State University campus. Cajon’s homes sell for a median price of $465,000 after 20 days on the market, although the full range spans from $370,000 to almost $600,000.Groceries, burritos and shopping centers
Two Stater Bros. Markets sit at the edges of the area, along with a Cardenas Markets grocery store, so residents have their pick of supermarkets to try. Cardenas Markets also operates a non-profit organization to help the communities it’s located in to stop children’s hunger and support education efforts. For those wanting to pick up dinner, Rosa Maria’s has been serving authentic Mexican cuisine to San Bernardino for over 40 years. It’s home to the locally famous Garbage Burrito, which lets customers choose their protein before it’s wrapped in a hand-made tortilla with an assortment of cheese and vegetables. For more shopping options, the neighborhood is six miles from the Del Rosa Shopping Center and Sterling Plaza. Both open-air malls have a wide selection of stores and services, like tax preparation, nail salons, and clothing boutiques.Highly rated schools and a nearby university
Students in Cajon might attend Niche A-minus-rated Hillside Elementary, C-rated Shandin Hills Middle and B-plus Cajon High School. Hillside Elementary is one of Niche’s top ten California elementary schools, while Shandin Hills Middle provides a technology device for every student to use during coursework. Cajon High School offers an assortment of specialized academies and pathways for the arts, cybersecurity, construction and more. Higher education options are close by as the neighborhood is adjacent to California State University-San Bernardino. The college offers over 70 degrees and programs to the 20,000 students attending annually.Local parks and nearby mountains
Cajon is perfectly positioned for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the perks and views of mountains and valleys. There are numerous trails through the nearby San Bernardino Mountains, including the Borea Canyon Trailhead, just 4.5 miles away. In fact, depending on which part of the San Bernardino National Forest residents want to explore, they’ll travel between four and 30 miles to reach their destination. Closer to home, Tom Gould Park lies just across Electric Avenue North. The pocket park is a popular spot with three playgrounds and picnic areas.Buses, cars and the Rim of the World
Residents of Cajon have easy access to the rest of the Inland Empire. While cars are helpful for running errands, locals have public transit options too. The 2 and 6 bus routes border the neighborhood, and the neighborhood is close to the 210 and 215 Freeways and the Rim of the World Highway. The Rim of the World Highway is a scenic route into the mountains, offering incredible views of the desert landscape. Back in Cajon, residents only have to travel four miles to the Dignity Health – St. Bernardine Medical Center or just over eight miles to the San Bernardino International Airport. Sidewalks run throughout the neighborhood, making it easier to get around on foot or with a mobility device.
Worship services in multiple languages
Cajon has nearly a dozen Protestant and Catholic houses of worship, including Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. It has both Spanish and English masses and broadcasts Sunday services via YouTube.Environmental factors and crime
Cajon has a CAP Index score of 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4. However, the area does have a high likelihood of earthquakes and wildfires. Fire insurance premiums can be higher because the region lies in a fire severity hazard zone. To quickly mitigate the risk of residential blazes, San Bernardino County Fire Station 227 sits at the southeast edge of the neighborhood. The city is also working to build concrete walls to redirect flash flood waters and install extra municipal water pumps to keep drinking water flowing after an earthquake.
