An Inland Empire neighborhood with a long history
San Bernardino’s Cajon neighborhood rests 5.5 miles from downtown, and around 4,000 people live in the neighborhood. The community is popular with California State University – San Bernadino students and outdoor enthusiasts drawn to its natural beauty and nearby hiking trails. The area is a residential haven today but was once the site of a 19th-century Spanish mission. Cajon means ‘box’ in Spanish, and the neighborhood takes its name from the Cajon Pass, whose steep walls made the narrow trail quite formidable. The Santa Fe Railroad built a track through the pass in 1885 and has been operating on that route ever since. In the 1940s and ‘50s, homes were built for workers in the aerospace and railroad industries, turning the area into a suburb in the city.
The Cajon neighborhood has many styles of homes and tree-lined streets.
Cajon residents can conveniently attend the California State University San Bernardino.

Midcentury designs in an established San Bernardino neighborhood
“Cajon is a beautiful foothill community. It’s very established, and a lot of the neighbors have been there for 40 years. It’s the type of place where people will pull in your trashcans if needed, a really close-knit area,” Kathy Thomson, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services and nearly 20 years of real estate experience. “Cajon has a stable market, with homes selling quickly. People move here because homes hold their value.” The neighborhood is filled with detached single-family homes and apartment complexes. Midcentury houses, ranch-style homes and Spanish-inspired dwellings stand beside tree-lined streets, and the designs were chosen to keep the extreme desert temperatures outside instead of in. Nearly 63% of people own their homes, while 37% rent. The high percentage of renters is primarily due to the nearby California State University campus. Cajon’s homes sell for a median price of $465,000 after 20 days on the market, although the full range spans from $370,000 to almost $600,000.

Groceries, burritos and shopping centers
Two Stater Bros. Markets sit at the edges of the area, along with a Cardenas Markets grocery store, so residents have their pick of supermarkets to try. Cardenas Markets also operates a non-profit organization to help the communities it’s located in to stop children’s hunger and support education efforts. For those wanting to pick up dinner, Rosa Maria’s has been serving authentic Mexican cuisine to San Bernardino for over 40 years. It’s home to the locally famous Garbage Burrito, which lets customers choose their protein before it’s wrapped in a hand-made tortilla with an assortment of cheese and vegetables. For more shopping options, the neighborhood is six miles from the Del Rosa Shopping Center and Sterling Plaza. Both open-air malls have a wide selection of stores and services, like tax preparation, nail salons, and clothing boutiques.
Cajon residents can shop for fresh produce and meats at Stater Bros. Markets.
Rose Maria's Mexican Food is a popular must-have that Cajon locals love.
