Roosevelt is a small community in the heart of San Bernardino, located near the intersection of two of the city’s main highways. People move to the area because of its central location and relatively low housing costs. Within minutes, you can be dining at a local restaurant in downtown San Bernardino or exploring the shops in Rialto. There’s also an elementary school in the neighborhood, which attracts families with younger kids.
Ranch-style homes from the early to mid-20th century make up most of the neighborhood, where nearly half of the residents rent. Many of the homes have been renovated by adding garages and updating appliances. “There are a lot of remodels, some by investors,” says Realtor Carlos Flores with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, who has been working in the area for over a decade. Depending on size and renovations, you can expect to pay between the mid-$200,000s and the mid-$500,000s. The median single-family home price is in the mid-$400,000s, which is less expensive than in Muscupiabe and other communities on the other side of the interstate. “It’s cheaper on this side,” Flores says. “Families are coming out here.”
Besides the relatively low housing costs, the location is Roosevelt’s biggest draw. “Once you are on the west side of the 215, you are pretty close to where you want to be,” Flores says. Living in Roosevelt puts you closer to major employers like California State University, San Bernardino and nearby cities like Rialto, about 5 miles (15 minutes) away and Los Angeles, about 60 miles (90 minutes) away. Downtown San Bernardino is only a mile (five minutes) to the east.
Interstate 215 wraps around the neighborhood, giving you easy access to other highways like state Route 210 and the rest of the Inland Empire. Public transportation is another option, with Omnitrans buses stopping in the area and a Metrolink station downtown.
Because the neighborhood is so close to the city center, there are plenty of eateries nearby. Options include:
Roosevelt falls within the San Bernardino City Unified School District, which receives a B-minus from Niche. Roosevelt Elementary School is in the neighborhood and offers a dual immersion program to help students become fluent in Spanish and English.
While Roosevelt itself has no parks, there are plenty of options in the surrounding neighborhoods. Nunez Park in Lytle Creek has ball fields and a swimming pool. The park’s recreation center hosts several programs throughout the year, including boxing lessons. You can also join a club at the Dorothy Inghram Branch Library, located in the New Hope Family Center. There are a couple of smaller parks in La Plaza, including Bobby Vega Park, which has a playground and tennis courts.
