An established downtown neighborhood near San Francisco Bay

Twelve miles from San Francisco, San Bruno Park offers easy access to shopping and dining, early 20th-century houses and numerous transit options. The mixed-use neighborhood contains part of San Bruno’s vibrant downtown, from San Bruno Avenue West to Taylor and Florida Avenues. The community is split between a retail-focused northern portion and a residential and restaurant-focused southern part. "San Bruno is a neat, nice bedroom community. It's got a nice sense of community, and shopping is easy to get to. You're also close to high tech and biotech," says Philip Watson, a Broker and agent at Christie’s International Real Estate who’s been selling in the Bay Area since 1980. The neighborhood is popular with young professionals for its public transit, freeway access and walkability. YouTube’s headquarters is nearby, and the company is one of the area’s largest employers.

Shopping centers, diverse restaurants and Artichoke Joe’s Casino

San Bruno Park has a mix of big box retailers, mom-and-pop shops, restaurants and entertainment options. The Shops at Tanforan and San Bruno Towne Center are located in the community’s northern portion. The towne center contains a Lucky supermarket, chain restaurants and a Marshall’s department store. The Shops at Tanforan offers a Cinemark Theatre, Target and Target Grocery, JCPenney and Barnes & Noble. There’s a food court with quick-service eateries, like Sarku Japan, Pate a Choux and Dim Sum Kitchen Express.

The neighborhood’s southern portion has an array of diverse eateries along San Mateo Avenue, which is part of San Bruno’s downtown. Pho De Nguyen makes a variety of Vietnamese soups, vermicelli bowls and spring rolls. Thai Nakorn is a family-owned business that has served the area for 20 years. Also on the avenue, Artichoke Joe’s Casino has been a haven for card players for over a century. It’s San Mateo County’s only legal casino.

Early 20th century houses surrounding downtown San Bruno

Founded in 1914, San Bruno Park has different styles of homes from various decades, mainly from the 1920s through the early 1950s. It’s the oldest part of the city and, despite containing downtown, is still more affordable than many other neighborhoods here, thanks to nearby San Francisco International Airport. "Airport traffic impacts the area, which has kept the prices down, making San Bruno Park appealing to the first-time homebuyer market," says Watson. The most common architectural styles are cottages and bungalows. Many houses have remodeled interiors or are turn-key properties. Homes sell for a median price of $1.1 million after around 42 days. Prices range from $975,000 to $1.1 million for single-family homes.

Playgrounds, athletic fields and San Bruno Park

San Bruno Park has a few green spaces and is close to several more. Forest Lane Park is a thin, tree-lined green space beside the 380 Freeway. It has a basketball court, playground and grassy open space. To the west of the neighborhood, San Bruno Park is the city’s largest green space. It features a senior center, 13 rentable picnic areas and three baseball/softball diamonds. It was designed to be used year-round, with a pool and tennis courts for warm weather and an under-construction Recreation and Aquatic Center for the winter. Kids can enjoy the two play areas, and a walking trail runs from the main parking lot to the senior center. Lions or Belle Air Park is slightly east of the San Bruno Park community. It has a baseball field and a combination soccer/football field. A canopied playground offers climbing areas, slides and activities.

Sidewalks, train stations and multiple freeways

Numerous travel options surround the neighborhood. Sidewalks allow people to walk to shopping centers, grocery stores and restaurants. Bus stops dot the major roadways. In fact, the Caltrain tracks form the eastern border, while El Camino Real, or Highway 82, acts as the western boundary. The area is bisected by Interstate 380, which intersects with I-280 a few miles west. Bayshore Freeway, commonly called the 101, leads to San Francisco, San Jose and Silicon Valley. The San Francisco International Airport is less than 2 miles east, and there is noise pollution from the airport and bordering roadways. I moved to San Bruno just over a year ago. San Bruno is conveniently located near my workplace and school. The weather is nice not to hot not too cold and we don't get the Daly City fog. Grocery stores and drug stores are very close by. Walking trails such a sweet Crystal Springs is also very close. The price in San Bruno is more reasonable than surrounding cities.

Current bill that was passed to remove smoking from apartment complex grounds. Although some may see this as a problem it does help promote the family safe environment. However, if a person is not allowed to smoke in their own home, they have to find a place to smoke elsewhere, removing the comfort of having your own home. Also the internet / cable monopoly in San Bruno is terrible, especially if San Bruno Cable does not provide the service quality they advertise.

San Bruno is a great city and super close to the airport and San Francisco. There are lots of places for activities, like parks, the mall, and senior center. Overall, it is a pretty safe neighborhood with many good food places as well. The area is pretty diverse too.

I would like to say that safety in SF is okay because accidents will always happen and the police will always try their hardest to help.
