San Bruno Park

Shopping centers, diverse restaurants and Artichoke Joe’s Casino
San Bruno Park has a mix of big box retailers, mom-and-pop shops, restaurants and entertainment options. The Shops at Tanforan and San Bruno Towne Center are located in the community’s northern portion. The towne center contains a Lucky supermarket, chain restaurants and a Marshall’s department store. The Shops at Tanforan offers a Cinemark Theatre, Target and Target Grocery, JCPenney and Barnes & Noble. There’s a food court with quick-service eateries, like Sarku Japan, Pate a Choux and Dim Sum Kitchen Express. The neighborhood’s southern portion has an array of diverse eateries along San Mateo Avenue, which is part of San Bruno’s downtown. Pho De Nguyen makes a variety of Vietnamese soups, vermicelli bowls and spring rolls. Thai Nakorn is a family-owned business that has served the area for 20 years. Also on the avenue, Artichoke Joe’s Casino has been a haven for card players for over a century. It’s San Mateo County’s only legal casino.
Early 20th century houses surrounding downtown San Bruno
Founded in 1914, San Bruno Park has different styles of homes from various decades, mainly from the 1920s through the early 1950s. It’s the oldest part of the city and, despite containing downtown, is still more affordable than many other neighborhoods here, thanks to nearby San Francisco International Airport. "Airport traffic impacts the area, which has kept the prices down, making San Bruno Park appealing to the first-time homebuyer market," says Watson. The most common architectural styles are cottages and bungalows. Many houses have remodeled interiors or are turn-key properties. Homes sell for a median price of $1.1 million after around 42 days. Prices range from $975,000 to $1.1 million for single-family homes.Playgrounds, athletic fields and San Bruno Park
San Bruno Park has a few green spaces and is close to several more. Forest Lane Park is a thin, tree-lined green space beside the 380 Freeway. It has a basketball court, playground and grassy open space. To the west of the neighborhood, San Bruno Park is the city’s largest green space. It features a senior center, 13 rentable picnic areas and three baseball/softball diamonds. It was designed to be used year-round, with a pool and tennis courts for warm weather and an under-construction Recreation and Aquatic Center for the winter. Kids can enjoy the two play areas, and a walking trail runs from the main parking lot to the senior center. Lions or Belle Air Park is slightly east of the San Bruno Park community. It has a baseball field and a combination soccer/football field. A canopied playground offers climbing areas, slides and activities.Century-old schools, technical education and 3D printers
Children can attend Allen Elementary School and Parkside Intermediate School, both of which earned a B-minus ranking from Niche. The elementary school is the oldest in the district, founded in 1910. Today, it focuses on students' mental and social development along with its core classes. Parkside Intermediate School offers electives like music, art and technology on a semester or school-year basis. A-minus Capuchino High School has a career technical education program with eight areas of study and is part of the International Baccalaureate Programme, which awards diplomas recognized worldwide. Nearby, the San Bruno Library features a children’s area where they can do homework, play and learn new skills.Sidewalks, train stations and multiple freeways
Numerous travel options surround the neighborhood. Sidewalks allow people to walk to shopping centers, grocery stores and restaurants. Bus stops dot the major roadways. The San Bruno BART station is adjacent to the Shops at Tanforan, and Caltrain’s San Bruno Station is on Huntington Avenue. In fact, the Caltrain tracks form the eastern border, while El Camino Real, or Highway 82, acts as the western boundary. The area is bisected by Interstate 380, which intersects with I-280 a few miles west. Bayshore Freeway, commonly called the 101, leads to San Francisco, San Jose and Silicon Valley. The San Francisco International Airport is less than 2 miles east, and there is noise pollution from the airport and bordering roadways. For medical assistance, the Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center is 3 miles north.National memorial to the Bay Area’s veterans
Opened in 1941, Golden Gate National Cemetery was constructed between the World Wars for the internment of veterans in the area. Covering over 160 acres, the L-shaped area has large gates and a series of one-story Mediterranean Revival buildings. Nearly 400 Medal of Honor recipients rest here, and people often come to walk paved pathways between the rows of markers. The cemetery is immediately west of San Bruno Park.Crime scores and varying air quality
The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 4 out of 10, the same as the national average. However, motor vehicle theft is above average, scoring 7 out of 10. San Bruno Park also experiences around 15 days of unhealthy air each year. People are advised to wear masks outdoors and use indoor air purifiers during these periods.
