Colina Del Sol
Green space, rec center and golfing at Colina del Sol Park
The keystone of Colina del Sol is Colina del Sol Park, a multipurpose green space with indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Outdoors, residents enjoy updated basketball courts, several playgrounds and multiple ball fields. Benches on site glisten with mosaic tiles featuring art created by community kids. Golf enthusiasts love having Colina Park Golf Course close to home. It's the headquarters for Pro Kids-First Tee San Diego, a nonprofit that helps youth excel by promoting character development through golf. Golfers of all levels hit the driving range, take lessons or play 18 holes amid rolling greens and ponds. The indoor Colina del Sol Park Recreation Center is popular for its game room, gymnasium, crafts room and new yoga classes added in 2024. You can also walk or bike to the smaller Wightman Street Park, equipped with sunny and pergola-shaded picnic tables surrounding a playground and basketball courts.Mostly multifamily, partly condos and single-family
Megan Beauvais, San Diego native and Realtor with Compass who's been selling homes since 2004, says, "Neighborhoods like Colina del Sol all throughout San Diego are becoming more desirable because of their comparative affordability. And as new, incoming first-time buyers move to these areas, we'll start to see an evolution, a rebirth of sorts in terms of pride of ownership." Although the Colina del Sol property mix is more than half multifamily rentals, modest single-family homes sit close together on numbered streets, and cute Cape Cods tuck between condos. Pueblo architecture coexists with more modern multi-gabled wood-siding homes; some are a fusion of stucco and siding. Near the elementary school, homes are painted in pastel hues and are often outlined with front-yard fencing. Depending on size, condos built in the 1970s and 1980s range from $350,000 to $475,000. Single-family midcentury ranch styles ask between $625,000 and $760,000. Multi-unit residential buildings in various stages of renovation sell as investment properties for between $1 million and $2 million.A-grade San Diego Unified School District
Public schools are within the San Diego Unified School District, which earns an A grade on Niche. Kids can walk to Ibarra Elementary in the neighborhood before moving on to Mann Middle at the eastern edge. Both Ibarra and Mann earn a B-minus. Crawford High School earns a B and has been through a series of significant demolition and modernization projects between 2021 and 2024 that have given the state-of-the-art campus a whole new look, first-class technology, additional classrooms and a fully equipped performing arts center. In 2023, the school's new PAC was recognized in American School & University magazine's "Educational Interiors Showcase" as an exemplary learning environment. City Heights Prep Charter School, which also earns a B, is a middle and high school option known for representing nearly 20 countries and 30 languages among its student body. About a mile west of central Colina del Sol, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart offers a private option for kindergarten through eighth grade.Santa Ana Fresh Mexican, drive-through bahn mi
Finding various cuisine options is easy because the community sits within two commercial corridors, El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue. Both are peppered with an array of casual, multicultural restaurants. Beauvais adds, "This is a great working-class neighborhood that will likely continue to be attractive to small businesses who find that rents are too high in other neighborhoods. So, we're seeing expansion on El Cajon and University from the city, with eateries and shops opening up as home ownership increases." For authentic Mexican, locals head to Santa Ana Fresh Mexican or next door to the brightly-painted Salsa Brava, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. At Cali Baguette Express, residents can drive through for Vietnamese banh mi, egg rolls and milk tea. To stock up for dining in, World Foods Supermarket carries Chinese, Vietnamese, Hispanic and American fare from dry goods to fresh produce. Bargain groceries are across the street at Grocery Outlet. Some bike lanes, easy-access bus stops and 2 miles from Interstate 15
Sidewalk-lined streets make it easy to walk and bike within the neighborhood. Painted bike lanes parallel 54th Street for biking north and south into adjacent communities. For public transit, San Diego Metropolitan Transit System bus stops dot the east-west El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue. Interstate 15 is less than 2 miles west of central Colina del Sol, for reaching Downtown San Diego or the San Diego International Airport in around a 10-mile, 20-minute drive.Movie night in Colina del Sol Community Park
