In a neighborhood where NBA legend Bill Walton honed his craft, Colina del Sol retains its down-home flavor while continuing to invest in revitalization and foster cross-cultural relationships. In late 2021, the same courts where young Walton played were completely renovated thanks to a Legends Home Courts grant from the National Basketball Retired Players Association, supported by Project Backboard, Hoopbus, U-Loc and Venice Ball Los Angeles. In celebration, nearly the entire community gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a youth tournament. Vibrant sun rays are painted mid-court in honor of Colina del Sol, which means "hill of the sun." Across the street from the park, the Union of Pan Asian Communities' Neighborhood Enterprise Center mentors immigrant and refugee youths who learn world skills by helping run The Neighborhood Café, which dubs itself "an affordable restaurant for our community."

The keystone of Colina del Sol is Colina del Sol Park, a multipurpose green space with indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Outdoors, residents enjoy updated basketball courts, several playgrounds and multiple ball fields. Benches on site glisten with mosaic tiles featuring art created by community kids. Golf enthusiasts love having Colina Park Golf Course close to home. It's the headquarters for Pro Kids-First Tee San Diego, a nonprofit that helps youth excel by promoting character development through golf. Golfers of all levels hit the driving range, take lessons or play 18 holes amid rolling greens and ponds. The indoor Colina del Sol Park Recreation Center is popular for its game room, gymnasium, crafts room and new yoga classes added in 2024. And as new, incoming first-time buyers move to these areas, we'll start to see an evolution, a rebirth of sorts in terms of pride of ownership." Although the Colina del Sol property mix is more than half multifamily rentals, modest single-family homes sit close together on numbered streets, and cute Cape Cods tuck between condos. Pueblo architecture coexists with more modern multi-gabled wood-siding homes; some are a fusion of stucco and siding. Near the elementary school, homes are painted in pastel hues and are often outlined with front-yard fencing. Depending on size, condos built in the 1970s and 1980s range from $350,000 to $475,000. Single-family midcentury ranch styles ask between $625,000 and $760,000. Multi-unit residential buildings in various stages of renovation sell as investment properties for between $1 million and $2 million.

A-grade San Diego Unified School District
Public schools are within the San Diego Unified School District, which earns an A grade on Niche. Kids can walk to Ibarra Elementary in the neighborhood before moving on to Mann Middle at the eastern edge. Both Ibarra and Mann earn a B-minus. Crawford High School earns a B and has been through a series of significant demolition and modernization projects between 2021 and 2024 that have given the state-of-the-art campus a whole new look, first-class technology, additional classrooms and a fully equipped performing arts center. So, we're seeing expansion on El Cajon and University from the city, with eateries and shops opening up as home ownership increases."
