New growth in the oldest Chollas Valley neighborhood
The Southeast San Diego neighborhood of Encanto (Spanish for “charm”) embodies a casual, unfussy spirit. As the oldest of the eight neighborhoods in the Chollas Valley planning area - a regional planning effort aimed at promoting community development and economic growth - the neighborhood was developed in 1907. Today, the community flourishes with new developments like Encanto Village on Imperial Avenue, offering 66 affordable housing options, and a growing Black Arts & Culture District with vibrant street art.

Comparatively affordable San Diego homes
Encanto’s topography consists of gently rolling hills with streetscapes in orderly grids; some homes sport well-maintained lots while others leave much landscaping to be desired. The community’s agricultural past still shows in areas of sagebrush and random avocado and eucalyptus trees that line a few streets. Five-bedroom stucco homes built after 2010 can cost around $870,000. Mobile homes in the Summit Ridge 55-and-better gated community are more affordable, starting at $140,000 to $200,000. Large Spanish-style homes with curved tile roofs and ranch-style homes that were built in the 1960s fall in the $700,000 to $800,000 range. According to Norma Delgadillo, local Realtor with Advantage Homes, “It’s centrally located, but you could save anywhere from $30,000 to $40,000 living in Encanto than in some areas that are just 10 miles away.”

Outdoor roller rink and community pool
Encanto's Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center and Park features a sandy playground with climbing rocks and a public swimming pool, while the George L. Stevens Senior Center offers a welcoming space for community gatherings and fitness programs. The Encanto Neighborhood Park’s rec center has a basketball court, craft room and kitchen (ideal for hosting parties). Ringer’s Roller Rink on Federal Boulevard is a local favorite with families, but every Thursday the grown-ups come out for Adult Night skating.

Wellness-focused coffee shop pours into the community
Encanto's vibrant commercial boulevard along Imperial Avenue is home to the nine-block Black Arts & Culture District. The Mental Bar, a Black-owned coffee and wellness shop, opened its doors in 2022. Named for the ideas that often sprout over a cup of coffee, The Mental Bar regularly hosts community events like art shows and book signings, with a mission to bring health, creativity and fresh brews to an area that was previously void of coffee shops, let alone wellness shops. “While we’re not from here, we’ve been in San Diego for 24 years so we really do consider it our home,” says Danyele Walker, who owns the Mental Bar with her husband, Tommy. “We knew that something as simple as a coffee shop could make a positive impact on the community, we just didn’t realize how far that impact would reach. We have coffee connoisseurs come from out of town just to try to our drinks.”
The Caribbean Taste in Trolley Stop Plaza serves up flavorful Jamaican cuisine, while Sammy's Mexican Bakery next door offers fresh pan dulce. Residents can stock up on groceries at Imperial Food Supermarket and Food Bargain Market, or shop for clothes at boutiques like The White Dress and Sammy Kids.
The surrounding streets have undergone a recent transformation thanks to the $400,000 Streetscape Art Project, revitalizing the stretch from 62nd to 69th Streets. Local artist Eddie Edwards' vibrant scenes on lampposts celebrate Encanto's history and progress, while murals adorn buildings and storefronts along Imperial Avenue.
The Mental Bar is a well reviewed cafe with eclectic design sensibilities.
Encanto's many murals keep the neighborhood colorful.
