Golden Hill
Neighborhood in San Diego, California
San Diego County 92102
Victorians and other homes decorate the street
Known for its one-of-a-kind architecture, official city documents from 1978 state that "experimentation was the hallmark of the turn of the century architecture, and it was during this period" that Golden Hill began to display a "certain American confusion of taste." The neighborhood contains a collection of longstanding dwellings from across the last century. "Golden Hill has a number of detached homes; many are Victorians from the 1900s. Buyers can take advantage of the Mills Act program to restore historic properties through a tax incentive," Grust says. Although the area showcases many styles, some of the most prominent are California bungalows, Craftsman influences and postmodern designs. Condos enter the market from $400,000 to $650,000, while detached homes value anywhere between $750,000 and $1.8 million.A small slice of Balboa Park
Golden Hill Park, in the southeastern corner of Balboa Park, has ball diamonds, a playground, and tennis courts. The grounds contain the Golden Hill Fountain Grotto, a historic landmark on the National Register. The site has a unique stairway and structure made of rock masonry. Next door is the Golden Hill Recreation Center, where locals play indoor basketball or take art and baking classes.Magnet programs and a faith-based option
Golden Hill Elementary is a public K to eight school offering a Dual Immersion Program for students; the school has a B-minus from Niche. Students may also enroll in the faith-based Our Lady's School. Teens will head to San Diego High, earning an A grade and the No. 6 spot for "Best Magnet High Schools in San Diego Area" from Niche.Traveling San Diego and nearby medical care
Located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego, Golden Hill has close access to freeways like State Route 94 and Interstate 5. Locals can easily access downtown via C and Broadway Streets; bus stops from the public San Diego MTS are dotted along the thoroughfares. Locals are able to receive medical care at the nearby Family Health Centers of San Diego location or the Naval Medical Center.Local dining gets a little retro
The area contains convenience stores and corner markets to pick up basic home supplies and groceries. Broadway and 25th Street are lined with restaurants showcasing the area's local flavors. Hungry diners eagerly support an array of vintage cafes, pizzerias and ice cream shops. Locals don't need a reservation for the community staple Golden Hill Café, located inside a building over 100 years old. Some patrons have been visiting the location for decades. Those craving authentic Mexican-style cuisine can order from the window at Birria El Rey or sit down to enjoy a meal with a margarita at Los Reyes Mexican Restaurant & Cantina. Diners grill steak and other entrees to their liking at the table in the late-night, adult-only 1950s-themed Turf Supper Club. Pizzeria Luigi is another popular establishment serving New York-style pizza and craft beer.
