From 19th century houses to more modern duplexes
Logan Heights has a number of attached housing, from apartment units and duplexes to condos; most residents rent their homes. However, homebuyers can find several sizes and styles, including Italianate and Queen Anne influences from the late 1800s. The neighborhood also features Craftsman bungalows and Mission Revivals from the 20th century. Average housing prices range from $500,000 for a cozy, 800-square-foot space to just over $1 million for a property containing multiple units.Fun at Memorial Park
Locals visit Memorial Park for more than just festivals. The fenced-in dog park is a popular spot for unleashed dogs. To the south is a large skate park for skateboarding and roller skating. The grounds recently received upgrades for lighting for soccer and baseball fields after dark, often used community leagues.Attending an educational complex
In 2022, the San Diego Unified School District replaced two neighborhood schools with a state-of-the-art educational complex. The Logan Memorial Educational Campus serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade with a Montessori education. The neighborhood also contains Burbank and Rodriguez Elementary schools, both of which earned a C-plus from Niche.Celebrating history and businesses
In early August, the Taste of Imperial Avenue event features sounds from local artists and a medley of aromas from restaurants, inviting locals to savor the eclectic flavors of Logan Heights. The event is hosted by the Logan Heights Community Development Corporation and the Greater Logan Heights Small Business Advisory Group to celebrate neighborhood business and cultural diversity.Chicano Park, a National Historic Landmark, rests just outside of the neighborhood in Barrio Logan. After the freeway separated the two neighborhoods, the community park was scheduled to be replaced with a California Highway Patrol station in 1970. Residents rallied, successfully saved the park and celebrated their success with over 100 murals dedicated primarily to Chicano and Indigenous history. Chicano Park Day in April commemorates the inspiring story of the park's creation and serves as an opportunity to enjoy an outdoor gallery of murals celebrating Mexican-American heritage.
A neighborhood wrapped in thoroughfares
The San Diego Trolley serves the area with two Orange Line stations along Commercial Street to arrive downtown or to the greater San Diego area. Logan Heights is located just southeast of downtown, so residents are within a few miles of the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park and other classic San Diego amenities. Some locals will also notice the humming of traffic from Interstate 5 and Highway 94.Locals visits markets and favorite dining spots
Some local favorites include El Salvadoreno, serving classic dishes such as carne asada baleadas. La Fachada on 25th Street is a go-to eatery for tacos and burritos with house-made corn tortillas. Hungry diners can also find prawns, oysters and other seafood prepared in classic Mexican dishes at Golosito. While Logan Heights is home to many comforting meals and convenient markets, neighbors also shop in Barrio Logan. Shoppers can head to Northgate Market, a popular grocery store specializing in all-natural chorizo, fresh pan de elote and other Mexican grocery items. "The area has a strong commercial presence and an entrepreneurial spirit with many locally-run businesses," says Lana Cooper-Jones, a San Diego native who grew up in and around the community.Living in a supportive community
For decades, residents have voiced concerns over heavy industries on the nearby waterfront contributing to air and noise pollution. The city approved a Portside Air Quality & Improvement Relief program through the support of a local nonprofit, Environmental Health Coalition. Logan Heights Community Development Corporation also provides supportive programs such as workshops for homeowners, monthly food distribution events and flood relief assistance.
