A coastal suburb next to Liberty Station
To live in Loma Portal is to enjoy quick jaunts to the beach or cliffside sunsets, walk to beloved San Diego eateries and admire the neighborhood landscape of well-kept historic homes. “Ever since the 1920s it’s been a walkable community where you can knock on anyone’s door,” says Michael Panissidi, who grew up in the neighborhood. Panissidi is now a Realtor with Ghio Panissidi and Associates under Coldwell Banker West. “It’s only becoming more desirable over the decades because it’s such a friendly place that’s so close to everything.” A major attraction to the neighborhood is its proximity to Liberty Station, which sits just across Rosecrans Street. The former naval training center is now an arts, entertainment and dining hub for San Diego in a beautified, waterfront setting.

Historic homes in a beautified setting
The gently sloped neighborhood is dotted with Monterey Cypress trees, soaring palms and other diverse flora soaking in the coastal moisture. Landscaping is varied, though consistently green – a rarity in San Diego. The architectural scene is visually interesting, with Spanish Revivals neighboring sleek contemporary builds and homes with Tudor stylings. “A lot of the homes here were built in the early 1900s, and many are historically designated,” Panissidi says. On the lowest end, two-bedroom 1930s bungalows sell just above $1 million. Three- and four-bedroom homes typically sit between $1.3 million and $1.9 million. Five-bedroom and fully renovated builds can climb above $2.5 million.
