East San Diego country living in suburban comfort
In the part of Scripps Ranch known as Miramar Ranch North, locals live quietly, far away from downtown, but are still close to neighbors, community parks, retail essentials and Interstate 15. In the 1890s, the immediate and surrounding landscape was a 1,200-acre ranch purchased by newspaper publisher Edward Scripps. Scripps named his since-razed home Miramar Ranch, meaning "view of the sea" in Spanish. Just south of nearby Miramar Reservoir, The Scripps Miramar Ranch Library occupies the lot where Scripps' daughter built her home in 1930. In the 1960s, Scripps' heirs sold the property to make way for residential development. "Throughout Miramar Ranch North, which is all part of Scripps Ranch, you'll see bigger homes and less density," says Kam Ng, mortgage loan officer with Finest City Homes and Loans, who has lived in the Scripps Ranch area for over 20 years. "The pace and lifestyle really cater to homebuyers who want a quiet neighborhood removed from the city. It's very different than La Jolla or downtown."

It's easy to bike along sidewalks or trek a backyard trail to Scripps Ranch Community Park and Miramar Overlook Park. Scripps Ranch Community Park includes play equipment, baseball fields and a paved walking loop. There are also indoor basketball and pickleball courts at Scripps Ranch Recreation Center, which offers a calendar of classes and programs for all ages, including cinematography, dance and gymnastics. At Miramar Overlook Park, just north of the Miramar Reservoir's miles of shoreline, locals play at the playground, picnic under shady pavilions and enjoy an elevated view of the reservoir. "Living around Miramar Lake is great for those who love a wilderness type of lifestyle where you can hike long distances, ride bikes along the water or have a casual barbecue," says Ng. "And just past the 15 and 56 corridors, miles of trails wind all through Black Mountain." Miramar Reservoir allows boating and fishing but no swimming or standup paddleboarding. The 5-mile paved Lake Miramar Trail parallels the water's edge and is popular with cyclists, runners and birdwatchers.
