From the mid-1800s to modern day living
Named in honor of the historic Mount Hope Cemetery, which dates back to the 1860s, the Mount Hope neighborhood is a small alcove in the southeastern corner of San Diego. Its namesake cemetery monuments are dedicated to some of the city's most notable leaders, including renowned real estate developer Alonzo Horton, known as the father of modern San Diego. The community has since grown into a dense neighborhood containing a blend of homes as well as industrial and commercial spaces. Today, residents may put down roots in the community garden or enjoy the recently upgraded park next to a business park along Gateway Center Drive. Volunteers, government initiatives and community groups work together to uplift Mount Hope and strengthen the sense of community in the neighborhood.

Quick commutes downtown and around the region
San Diego's MTS bus stops along Market Street. Commuters can also catch the Orange Line light rail at 47th St. Station or 32nd & Commercial St. Station, outside the neighborhood. "Because Mount Hope is surrounded by the 15, 805 and 94, you're really in the heart of everything. If you work downtown, you can park your car and hop on the trolley, or you can drive to the beach in minutes." Martinez says.

Buyers find comparatively lower home prices
In Mount Hope, stucco-covered homes are tucked into neat grids with sidewalks. Streets contain modest midcentury bungalows, contemporary homes built around the 1990s and multiple-unit properties. Most residences are 800 to 1,300 square feet. Those looking to buy into Mt. Hope can expect to pay between $550,000 to $725,000 on average. Here, a well-maintained 2,300 square foot home from the 1940s can leave the market around the same price as a 1,100 square foot home built at the end of the 20th century. "A lot of the homes in Mt. Hope can be traditional old-style," says Norma Martinez, local resident and Realtor with Coldwell Banker West, "but compared to going into other areas where you'd spend a million, you can get a home for $700,000 here."

Comforting flavors and nearby retail options
The smell of smokey oak flavors hangs in the air outside the husband-and-wife-owned Bowlegged BBQ. The dining spot has remained a neighborhood mainstay for over 50 years, with recipes passed down through generations. Hungry diners enjoy the live bands and savory seafood at Mariscos Altata, offering menu favorites such as aguachile and fish tacos.
The small Fresh Garden Market is available in the community for grocery runs, and shoppers can stock up at Costco within walking distance of many homes. And even though retail and entertainment options may be limited within the neighborhood, Martinez explains, "Living in Mt. Hope, you can hop on any of the three freeways and reach all the fun breweries in Barrio Logan, or nice restaurants in Lemon Grove, or go north to Old Town. And just a couple exits down the 805, you can shop at Plaza Bonita Mall. There's so much to do so close to home." Almost half of Mount Hope is comprised of industrial spaces like manufacturers and a recycling center.

Enjoying a new playground and fresh produce
Dennis V. Allen Park sits between residences and the Gateway Center Drive business park. The greenspace received a new playground in 2023 after the first was destroyed by fire. Children enjoy a Nature Exploration Area made of repurposed wood from fallen trees, and locals of all ages can shoot hoops on the basketball court or jog along a walking trail.
Residents also gather at the Mount Hope Community Garden. The neighborhood space, established by Project New Village, brings sustainable agriculture to communities with minimal access to locally grown foods. Conceived on a formerly empty lot, the garden supports the mission of the Good Food District, which invests in the wellness of areas without supermarkets. This living gathering spot provides a place for gardeners and hosts a market garden space throughout the month.
A sand pit and play structures make Dennis V. Allen Park a family-friendly destination.
Vendors offer fresh produce from roadside stalls, drawing in neighborhood foot traffic.
