Aptly named for its many trees
Set in the center of the Point Loma Peninsula, Wooded Area is fittingly named for the many eucalyptus, avocado and palm trees that line its residential streets. Less than a mile east, Kellogg Beach sits beside San Diego Bay, and to the west, the Sunset Cliffs overlook the Pacific Ocean. A resident here might be a retiree, a staff member at Point Loma Nazarene University, which sits in the neighborhood's southwest corner, or an employee of Naval Base Point Loma, which is 3 miles away at the southern tip of the peninsula.
Downtown San Diego, Ocean Beach and historic Liberty Station are within 7 miles of the neighborhood, but Wooded Area feels farther removed from the city. "The only time it gets noisy here is when the planes from San Diego's airport fly up ahead,” says Danny Quesada, Top San Diego Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of Southern California. “I never see it get too busy. Families love how quiet it is here, and of course they love how good the schools are.” Public schools in Point Loma Heights are zoned within the San Diego Unified district, which earns an overall A from Niche.

With a daily dose of ocean mist, Wooded Area has more trees than other San Diego neighborhoods.

Secluded homes in private enclaves
The palm-lined Catalina Boulevard splits the neighborhood in half. To the east, streets and homes are arranged in neat grids, while to the west, homes are set along winding roads that trace hilly terrain; some hillside homes offer panoramic views that stretch from Downtown San Diego to the Pacific Ocean, and even as far as Mexico. Throughout the neighborhood, most homes are midcentury modern from the late 1950s with drought-resistant landscaping or lush lawns. Three-bedroom single-family homes go for between $1.5 and $2 million, while five-bedroom homes can go for between $4 million to $6 million.

Point Loma Nazarene sits in the west portion
Kids here might start school at Sunset View Elementary, which earns an A from Niche, then advance to the A-minus rated Correia Middle. Point Loma High, also rated an A-minus, offers clubs for special interests like sailing and hiking. In the neighborhood's western end, private Point Loma Nazarene University has offered a Christian-based liberal arts education since 1973.

Watch boats sail by from Kai Marina
In the western corner of Wooded Area, the 68-acre Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is one of Point Loma's biggest draws. Surfers head here for the waves, but most visit for the sea caves and hidden beach, as well as coastal bluffs that offer panoramic ocean views. The neighborhood's closest green space is Point Loma Park, a mile north; home to the Point Loma Little League baseball team and an occasional venue for outdoor concerts. Kellogg Beach is about 2 miles from the neighborhood, on the San Diego Bay side of the peninsula. Residents can head to this small, dog-friendly beach for views of the Kona Kai Marina, with boats neatly docked along the piers. Part of a statewide network of marine protected areas, the 37-acre Famosa Slough sits 3 miles away, a calm estuary for sea creatures and plants that combines brackish, salt and fresh water.

Historic Liberty Station shopping
While Wooded Area is entirely residential, a couple of colorful commercial streets are found 2 miles north in Ocean Beach. Voltaire Street eateries include Don Tommy's Mexican food, which serves authentic burritos, tortas and tamales, counter-service style; on Newport Avenue, Krisp Beverages + Natural Foods specializes in organic, locally sourced groceries. About 2 miles northeast of Wooded Area, Liberty Station was once a naval training center, and is now a sprawling shopping center. Here, residents can order craft beers and dine outdoors at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, head to the indoor public market for local shops like Gilmore Family Jewelers, and grocery shop at Trader Joe’s and Vons.

Pros and cons of living by the airport
Interstate 8 and major north-south route Interstate 5 are about 3 miles west of the neighborhood, along Catalina Boulevard; the 5 leads roughly 9 miles north to Downtown San Diego. San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) buses stop along Rosecrans and Canon Street, with routes connecting to Downtown and Old Town. Bikers ride down Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, either on sidewalks or on the left shoulder, closest to the water. Kaiser Permanente Point Loma hospital is 4 miles away. Wooded Area lies beneath the flight path of San Diego International Airport, which is 3 miles away, but Quesadas says that airplane noise here is mostly experienced between the hours of 8 am and 10 am, and 4 pm to 6 pm.

Beach access in neighboring Ocean Beach is another major draw of Wooded Area.
