Former home of the San Francisco Giants

On the eastern edge of San Francisco is Candlestick Point. Often shrouded in fog and chilled by cool Pacific crosswinds, the neighborhood holds a special place in many San Franciscan’s hearts. Formerly the home of the city’s beloved Giants baseball team, this stretch of land on a lip of the bay is largely open with nature trails coursing by the waterfront, near the iconic stadium complex that remains etched in the memory of resident San Francisco sports fans. Now, the area brings in more residential living, particularly for those seeking lower city housing costs with a newer, contemporary aesthetic next to the quieter eastern San Francisco shoreline. “The Candlestick area has a lot of newer residents, and it’s a more affordable part of San Francisco partly because there’s not a lot that’s around it,” says Kathy Wall, a nearby Brisbane resident and local realtor at INTERO Real Estate Services. “There are mostly just townhomes and condos here, and they are all very nice and near the bay.”

Newer condominium buildings with bay views

Within the eastern portion of the neighborhood, modern Mediterranean-influenced townhouse-style condos sit perched on slopes leading down to the bay, offering residents picturesque views from their balconies, living rooms and personal quarters. Nestled in a cove and bounded to the west by the Bayshore Freeway is the central part of the neighborhood. This area features tree-lined boulevards, traffic intersections with brick inlay crosswalks and fences enclosing a gated contemporary-style condo complex. Though Candlestick Point has limited home-buying options, the prices are relatively affordable by San Francisco standards. With the city’s average home value sitting at $1.6 million, residents can find small 2-bedroom, 2-bath condo units that start as low as $550,000, while townhouses and more luxurious condos with panoramic views of the bay often range between $700,000 and $1 million.

Directly north of the neighborhood, the Bayside Café in Little Hollywood specializes in classic diner fare and breakfast with touches of Mexican influences. Nearby, Laughing Monk Brewing’s spacious pub serves tons of ales and brews on tap. Residents have a few local grocery options just outside the neighborhood, including Bayshore Market, Sun Valley Dairy or the Grocery Outlet.

Summer concerts and community-created public art

At Candlestick Point Park, the annual “Growing Together” social gathering takes place each May and is a favorite neighborhood event. Locals come together to design a community-created mural that permanently resides at one of the park’s structures while enjoying family-friendly activities, food trucks and live music. When looking for other community events, nearby John McLaren Park, located a few miles east, hosts a few local gatherings throughout the year at the site’s amphitheater area. The most popular event is a free summer concert series, where locals can sit out on the lawn and enjoy outdoor musical performances from some of the area’s best talents.

Hiking at Candlestick Point Recreation Area

Across from the main Candlestick Point neighborhood area, residents can cross the street to stroll along paved paths that outline the point along the shore. For a brief trip, locals can walk out to the end of the Point Regulus pier to watch boats and ships return to their docks as the sun sets beyond the horizon. Continuing along the trails, residents can fish at the Sunrise Point Fishing Pier, a popular, wind-swept spot for area fishermen, or explore even more of the bay’s ecosystem on a bike or foot in the neighborhood’s 252-acre Candlestick Point Recreation Area. Bayview Park is a little farther north and inland, surrounded by Eucalyptus trees and offering beautiful panoramic views of San Francisco and the Peninsula, along with a looped walking and biking trail.
