Stroll near one of the neighborhood’s vertexes, and one of Duboce Triangle’s top assets becomes clear. This centrally located enclave is a junction of sorts in San Francisco’s Muni light rail system — almost every Muni line in the city cuts through Duboce Triangle, making it easy to commute elsewhere. But with its eclectic collection of classic homes and conveniently placed retail and dining amenities, this is a neighborhood residents never really have to leave, either — a mostly comfortable spot despite a crime score that ranks above the national average according to the CAP Index. "It’s possible to live happily here and almost never leave,” says David Lytle, a longtime Duboce Triangle resident and former editor of the city's 7x7 Magazine. “Everything you could want is within three blocks, from restaurants to grocery stores to Davies Hospital.”

Classic homes galore
Duboce Triangle has mostly an established housing inventory — many options here date back to the turn of the 20th century. Thus, Duboce Triangle offers a good representation of classic architectural eye candy. Many of the neighborhood's homes have Victorian style elements, with intricate wood trim, turret windows and facades that come in a crayon box worth of colors. However, there is a smattering of options built after the turn of the 21st century here, including some condos. Homes all around Duboce Triangle line sloping, sidewalk-lined streets. Price tags range from about $1 million for a condo under 1,000 square feet to well over $2 million for an updated single-family home.

Residents can take their dining pick
The thoroughfare of Market Street forms one of the sides of Duboce Triangle, a stretch lined with an assortment of eateries and other businesses. The neighborhood's options can suit a range of occasions, too, whether a night out with friends at The Detour, an arcade bar with dozens of games, or date night at the intimate French spot L'Ardoise Bistro, which counts duck leg confit cooked for seven hours among its most popular dishes. Those eyeing a quiet night in can swing by the neighborhood’s Safeway supermarket to grab items for a home-cooked meal. And quiet in Duboce Triangle is easy to come by — for the most part. “There aren’t a lot of drawbacks to this neighborhood, honestly,” Lytle says. “Aside from the fact that it can get loud at night when folks are leaving the bars. Otherwise, noise pollution is mostly due to sirens from the local fire station.”
In addition to restaurants and bars, many Duboce Triangle residents are within walking distance of the CPMC Davies Campus hospital, whose features include neuroscience and rehabilitation centers.

A regular drumbeat of events
Duboce Triangle is home to a range of events over the course of the year. For instance, locals can stop by the Castro Farmers Market along Noe Street every Wednesday from April to November, for eggs, bread, flowers and more. The Castro Easter Eggstravaganza also takes place on Noe, a day filled with a petting zoo, live music, an art market and an appearance from the Easter Bunny. Plus, the neighborhood’s Duboce Park hosts periodic movie nights and also DogFest a springtime celebration of man’s best friend that raises money for nearby McKinley Elementary.

City schools carry a strong reputation
The San Francisco Unified School District not only allows families to choose which institutions they go to rather than assigning solely by address, but it also carries an A overall grade on Niche. McKinley Elementary is one of the particularly close options for kindergarten to fifth grade, a school whose arts offerings include choir and dance. From McKinley, students may move on to the B-minus-rated Everett Middle, which offers the district’s Newcomer Program, providing English language development for students from other countries. The B-rated Mission High can be next, where students can participate in career and technical education programs in environmental science, fire science and EMS, media arts, peer resources, public health or urban agriculture.

Duboce Park is an area gem
The area’s Duboce Park is a hub for the community. Like the neighborhood, the park is named after 19th-century army officer Victor Duboce, who served as a lieutenant colonel for the First California Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish-American War. Duboce Park is particularly popular with dog owners thanks to its dog play area — so much so that a section of the park was marked as “people only.” Duboce also has a well-used basketball court.

Muni is easy to access in Duboce Triangle
Duboce locals can find multiple Muni light rail stops around the intersection of Market Street, Church Street and 14th Street. The Muni system includes dozens of routes around the city. There are also several Muni bus stops in Duboce Triangle. Drivers in Duboce Triangle have quick access to U.S. Route 101 as well, for trips to other parts of the city, including those close to the bay.
