High-rise living and skyline views in this Fortunate 500 San Francisco hub
The Financial District/Barbary Coast is the bustling business center of San Francisco, pierced by skyscrapers and home to numerous Fortune 500 headquarters, iconic city structures like the 48-story Transamerica Pyramid building and some of the city’s finest dining, hotel and shopping destinations. Residents seeking to live in the district are often looking to be close to work or want a residential space with gorgeous city skyline views paired with the convenience of luxury amenities. “The Financial District is prominently condos and new development high rises like the famous Millennium Tower that leans over 20 inches,” says Peyton Stiewe, a local realtor for over 20 years and co-broker of the Peyton+Bennings boutique real estate group. “You also have big attractions here like the beautiful Salesforce Park that’s elevated at the Salesforce Transit Center and the San Francisco Modern American Museum.” With its close proximity to other San Francisco institutions, like the Embarcadero and the Ferry Building that reside on the neighborhood’s east side, the Financial District/Barbary Coast delivers a high-end and cultural urban experience in the heart of San Francisco’s center business hub.

Timeless Tavern dining and Michelin-star eateries
The Financial District/Barbary Coast is surrounded by some of the best restaurants in San Francisco, offering a mix of fine dining and more sophisticated business lunch spots for working residents. One of the top-rated places is Wayfare Tavern, which serves American food inspired by San Francisco’s early 1900s restaurant scene. With a rich, timeless interior space, residents enjoy notable menu items like fried chicken and truffle deviled eggs. On Washington Street, the Michelin-star Kusakabe restaurant lets diners indulge in a Chef’s choice tasting menu of sushi varieties within an intimate, 29-seat dining space. Modern Greek cuisine is the shining star at Kokkari Estiatorio, a trendy spot that perfectly transitions its Mediterranean-styled interior from day to night for casual lunch meetings to more elegant dinner dates. For grocery staples, residents are steps away from the well-stocked Safeway on Mission Street. Spanning four flocks, the Embarcadero Center is a mixed-used commercial building that houses over 100 retail stores and service shops. Although the pandemic caused a few business closures within the center, the Embaradero is still the district’s prominent shopping destination. Current plans are to fill vacant retail spaces, bringing it back to the height of its pre-Covied retail glory.

San Francisco’s largest rooftop park
Along the clusters of skyscrapers and businesses, small pockets of green spaces offer respite from the hustle and bustle of the district’s working culture. Situated around tall office buildings on Clay Street, Maritime Plaza is a two-acre, beautifully landscaped city park with an open green lawn. The plaza’s shaded towering trees provide the perfect setting for an outdoor lunch break while catching a glimpse at some of the infamous wild parrots that commonly find a resting spot here. The nearby Sue Bierman Park is a 5.3-acre outdoor haven with an expansive open field, ideal for picnicking and laying out in the sun. A popular feature is the pirate-themed children’s playground, and locals enjoy the park’s paved walking loop that flows through the site for a leisurely afternoon stroll. Perhaps the most iconic park is the rooftop Salesforce Park, located at the Salesforce Transit Center. This infamous 5.4-acre site spans four blocks and features 600 trees and 16,000 plants. Locals can enjoy a walking trail winding along small botanical gardens and kids can run around the children’s play area. The site’s amphitheater is where visitors can participate in free yoga classes or stop by for an evening of outdoor movie showings.
