Colorful, laid-back neighborhood in San Francisco’s Sunset District
Along the gridded streets in the southwest corridor of San Francisco is Parkside, a desirable neighborhood with well-maintained homes, highly rated schools and ocean views in the distance. “It’s a highly residential area located in what we call the Sunset District, which consists of a few different neighborhoods on the westside near the ocean with a lot of colorful housing,” says Eddie O’Sullivan, a longtime Realtor and Broker with Elevation Real Estate. “Because it’s so residential, it actually feels quieter, and just like other parts of the Sunset, you get a little more of a Southern California chill vibe here.” While the neighborhood’s surrounding district has a “sunny” namesake, the area is actually one of the foggier locations in the city. Although the fog causes temperatures to drop, the area is still a popular destination for surfer types and other locals looking for a more relaxed atmosphere. Homes around here are colorful in nature and are designed with a beachy aesthetic. “It’s a super laid-back area,” says Kevin Roger Teng, co-owner of SarangHello, a Korean Pop store located within the neighborhood’s primary commercial sector. “A lot of people like to come here because it’s really quiet, not anything like downtown, and that’s the appeal. People will come to our store, not even to buy merchandise but sometimes just to hang out, and then they’ll head down to the beach. That’s what you’ll see here often in the Sunset, especially in Parkside.”

Marina-style housing and wide residential streetscapes
Parkside mainly consists of single-family homes built from the 1930s to the 1940s. These residences are a painter's palette of both soft and vibrant colors that offer a varied look throughout the streetscape. The landscape has gently sloping lots, and most dwellings have steps leading up to front doors. There are a lot of vintage housing styles, such as Arts and Crafts bungalows and cottages from the early 20th century. Marina-style homes are also a major design trend in Parkside and are seen throughout most of the neighborhoods in the Sunset district. Other common housing styles include Mediterranean influences, which display expressive and compact designs. Two-bedroom single-family home prices range from around $1 million to $1.5 million, while four-bedroom homes range from $1.6 million to $2.6 million. The neighborhood features wide streets, and while there’s a lack of trees that provide shade, many homes display small greenery, including succulents and plants. Parkside’s streetscapes are quieter than other Sunset District neighborhoods due to their distance a little further away from more buzzing beach area establishments. “Some of these homes, depending on where they are situated in the neighborhood, offer really great deck views that look out all the way to the ocean,” says Monika Carmichael, a Realtor with Elevation Real Estate and a San Francisco resident of 28 years who lives in nearby Inner Sunset.

As its name suggests, Parkside has many green spaces and even more just outside the neighborhood. The windswept Sunset Reservoir Park is an open space that looks out to scenic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. Just outside the neighborhood is the Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, which is a verdant gathering space with hilltops, meadows and vibrant wildflowers. The grounds contain an amphitheater that sets the stage for summer concerts and musical events hosted by the San Francisco Symphony. There is also a popular dog park for canine residents. To the west of the park is a lush valley and lake known as Pine Lake Park, an optimal spot for viewing migratory birds. The neighborhood is less than 2.5 miles from the San Francisco Zoo and the sandy shores of Ocean Beach. Although it’s known for being a cold beach with freezing to cool temperatures, the area is a popular spot for walking along the beach, volleyball tournaments and for those willing to embrace the cold, surfers are still a common sight.

it's a city that's suffering techie take over and gentrification-so it's at it's knees...the police are awful they keep to crimes and are not helpful with anything else...ambulances are fight response times due to congestion and construction is going up in places that it should never have been going up in the first place causing wind tunnels, so it's very different in the the last 50 years...it is not a predominantly white irish city anymore, it's very diverse and you need to know many languages and the new people have no tolerances for the little folks and families have bottomed out at fourth grade...it's really sad..it's like Richie Rich's playground..it's lost it's family environment and everything has become to expensive to enjoy much

The housing is okay. It's pretty expensive to rent a house in this city, especially in the Sunset. The houses are decent size, but they are usually built right next to each other.
