Live the hilltop lifestyle in Potrero
In Potrero, the tight-knit community is just as appealing as the neighborhood’s sweeping views. Often called Potrero Hill, this residential village ascends toward the clouds just south of downtown San Francisco. “It’s a wonderful neighborhood because it’s located within San Francisco, but it feels like a village of its own,” says Claudia Siegel, a Realtor with Compass and a longtime resident of the community. “A lot of people have lived here a long time, sometimes multiple generations on the same block.” With access to major employers in both downtown and Silicon Valley, multiple forms of public transportation, neighborhood schools and colorful real estate, Potrero offers a mix of commuter convenience, family-friendly recreation and funky night life.
Fun and Funky restaurants on 18th
Concentrated along walkable 18th Street, Potrero’s culinary scene includes rustic favorites like Plow, offering locally sourced comfort fare, and Chez Maman, a cozy French bistro with a date-night vibe. Many of the restaurants feature small sidewalk patios shaded by flowering trees, where diners can enjoy their meals with a stunning view of downtown San Francisco in the backdrop. Two blocks north on funky 17th Street, nightlife takes center stage with an eclectic lineup of live music at popular spots like Bottom of the Hill. Although the neighborhood does provide access to chain grocers such as Whole Foods and the all-organic Good Life Grocery, Potrero’s mom-and-pop stores are at the heart of the community. Locals can stop at corner stores like Potrero Terrace Market for everyday items, and residents rave about the gently used tomes at Christopher’s Books, a 1991 bookstore that has consistently dodged the drag of the digital age.

Finding a room with a view in Potrero
With colorful row homes, historical detached houses and a litany of new condos and apartments, Potrero has housing options for single commuters, growing families and everyone in between. Three-bedroom single-family homes tend to sell in the $2 million to $3 million range, while two-story townhouses and one-story condos often list between $800,000 and $1.2 million. Elevation is also a huge factor in Potrero’s home prices. “Particularly on the hill, low inventory has kept the pricing high,” Siegel says, noting that the homes with the most spectacular views often have hefty price tags closer to $4 million.

Something for everyone at the rec center
At Potrero Hill Recreation Center, kids can explore the modern, colorful playground while dogs enjoy a leash-free run in the designated play area. Lighted tennis and basketball courts and a grassy baseball diamond provide space for both local leagues and pickup games, while the indoor rec center offers yoga and Pilates classes for adults and after-school programs for kids. Less than a mile away, McKinley Square includes a playground, winding trails and shaded picnic areas. It also connects with the Potrero Hill Community Garden, where residents have grown their own produce and flowers since the 1970s. Potrero is also just minutes from the beach at Crane Cove Park and a short drive from the scenic hiking trails at Twin Peaks.

Potrero traditions
In October, the community comes together for the Potrero Hill Festival, a more than 30-year tradition. “They close down a couple of the flat blocks, and there are lots of vendors and even a carnival for the kids,” Siegel says. Throughout the year, the local Potrero Hill Neighborhood House also hosts engaging events such as a STEM Festival.
