Sunnyside

Historic Victorians and hilltop homes with scenic views
First developed in 1891, homes in this streetcar suburb reflect its longstanding presence in the city. Typical housing styles here include Victorians, Craftsman-style cottages and midcentury bungalows. Some bungalows in the community have Spanish Mission-inspired elements, with terracotta barrel-tiled roofs and miniature church bells on their front gables. Homes here are densely built and may offer little in the way of front yards, but many have large backyards with privacy fencing. Houses at the top of the hill have excellent views of the city and distant San Bruno Mountain. Prices range from $815,000 for a small, 750-square-foot home to $2.9 million for a 3,000-square-foot renovated property with luxury-style interiors.Stores and eateries along Monterrey Boulevard
Shopping and dining options are located along Monterrey Boulevard, offering a mix of stores like Safeway for groceries and local eateries such as Shangai Dumpling King. Won Kok Restaurant offers Chinese cuisine, while Big Joe’s is a longstanding American diner known for its plate-sized stacks of pancakes and classic burgers. For more extensive shopping, the expansive Serramonte Center is five miles south by taking the 280 Freeway, with big box stores like Costco, Target and Home Depot.Neighborhood-wide garage sales and holiday parties
Sunnyside is known for its active neighborhood association, which organizes events throughout the year. These gatherings include an annual neighborhood-wide garage sale each September, a spring community gardening event and a holiday party in December.K-12 and the largest community college in the nation
Students may attend Sunnyside Elementary School, which gets an A-minus rating from Niche, followed by the B-rated James Denman Middle School. The A-minus-rated Balboa High School offers numerous unique career-focused electives, including media production, horticulture and creative computing. On the neighborhood's southern edge lies City College of San Francisco, the largest community college in the United States.Neighborhood gardens and a central park
The Sunnyside Conservatory, a hundred-year-old garden, is a neighborhood staple. It has a decorative conservatory constructed of local redwood and is a popular spot for relaxing along its colorful grounds. The Sunnyside Playground and Recreation Center is the neighborhood’s central park, featuring a playground, basketball and pickleball courts, open lawn spaces and a looped walking and jogging trail. The site also has a rec center with indoor basketball courts and an exercise gym. The neighborhood is also home to the beautifully manicured Melrose Detroit Botanical Garden, managed by the neighborhood association. For hiking, Glen Canyon Park is two miles north for hilly trails with sweeping vistas showcasing the city and San Francisco Bay.Next to the 280 Freeway and multiple BART Stations
The 280 Freeway borders the neighborhood, while the Glen Park BART station is less than a mile away, making it easy to get around by car or public transportation. There are also multiple MUNI bus stops along Monterey Boulevard. Laguna Honda Hospital is just two miles away, and the San Francisco International Airport is 11 miles south.
