What living in Cataldi means for Bay Area commuters

Cataldi is a well-established neighborhood in the Berryessa area of northeast San Jose known for its easy Silicon Valley commute. Homebuyers are drawn to the area for its updated single-family homes near Interstate 680, light rail stations and the Milpitas BART station. Major employment hubs throughout San Jose and the Bay Area are only a short ride away from the neighborhood's convenient location. You're also minutes from popular neighborhood parks, dining options and everyday shopping. Local students attend highly rated schools, and nearby Berryessa offers plenty of events year-round.

What types of homes and prices are found in Cataldi

Single-family homes from the 1960s and 1970s line most streets. Ranch-style homes are the most common style available, but the community also has many New Traditional and Spanish Revival two-story houses. Many homes have been updated with remodeled kitchens and open layouts. Some properties include extensive renovations or less-common amenities, like wood-burning fireplaces and in-ground pools. Prices generally range from $1.2 million to $2.2 million. "It's within range for first-time homebuyers," says Realtor Sherri Stoneberger of Everhome Real Estate. "It's not in the luxury realm."

The community also has several condo and townhouse complexes clustered beside Northwood Square. These traditional or contemporary units usually range between the upper $700,000s and the mid-$800,000s, plus monthly HOA fees.

Highways, light rail and BART support an easy daily commute

"The prevailing reason why people like it here is the commute," Stoneberger says. "You've got a lot of tech people living in the area." Commuters have immediate access to Interstate 680, a major corridor connecting to Downtown San Jose less than 10 miles away. The area is also within 15 miles of major employers in North San Jose and Fremont via Interstate 880 and Montague Expressway. Alternative transit options include:

  • VTA bus routes within Cataldi
  • VTA light rail stations along North Capitol Avenue
  • A BART train station in neighboring Milpitas
  • Bike lanes along major roads and regional trails

People can explore neighborhood parks or the Diablo Range foothills

"Cataldi is a great spot for people who like the outdoors," Stoneberger says. Inside the neighborhood, Cataldi Park is a popular spot for tennis, sand volleyball and leisurely walks. The park also has playgrounds and reservable picnic areas with barbecue pits. Closer to the Diablo Range foothills, Alum Rock Park has miles of natural trails, ranging from level paths along Penitencia Creek to challenging canyon climbs with views of the Santa Clara Valley. Historic stone grottos from the park's days as a 19th-century mineral spring resort are still visible along the trails.
