Living near Downtown San Jose without the noise
Less than 6 miles northeast of Downtown San Jose, Checkers is an urban residential community with close access to neighborhood parks, schools and local shopping and dining. “It’s a very convenient location,” says Mimi Du, a Realtor with BRG Realty with over 20 years of real estate experience. “You have all the freeways — 101, 80, 77, 680 — and you’re close to the airport, close to everywhere.” Neighborhood parks include Overfelt Gardens and Plata Arroyo Park, local restaurants line McKee Road, and schools for all grades are within 2 miles. “It's a family-oriented neighborhood since it’s close to a lot of the area schools, and it’s very quiet for how close it is to downtown,” says Tiffany Castano, the on-site property manager at Green Villa Apartments. “It’s a simple community with a lot of working-class people, and people live here because of its convenient location and nearby shopping centers.” Nearby houses of worship include the Pao Hua Buddhist Temple and Iglesia Primitiva Jesucristo el Pan De Vida.

Single-family homes, townhouses and condos
“Most homes here are single-story older houses built 30 to 40 years ago,” says Du. Early 20th-century to midcentury bungalows with up to three bedrooms are set on up to 1,500-square-foot lots with low-water plantings, short driveways and attached garages; prices range from $600,000 to $1 million. “The new houses are two-story townhouses or condos.” Late 20th-century condos start at around $400,000, while Craftsman-inspired townhouses from the late 20th century through early 2000s start at $600,000; those with two or more bedrooms, as well as back patios and balconies, can go up to $900,000. Townhouses and condos typically belong to homeowner’s associations, like those in Madden Village, while early 20th-century to midcentury bungalows do not. “If the land is bigger, the cost is higher,” says Du. There are also several apartment buildings available to rent in the neighborhood's southeast corner.

Less than a mile away, the 33-acre Overfelt Gardens borders the neighborhood with three ponds and paved, winding trails shaded by mature trees. The gardens are also home to the 6-acre Chinese Cultural Garden, established in 1971 and featuring a statue of Confucius and several structures inspired by traditional Chinese architecture. Du recommends Alum Rock Park, about 4 miles north, where residents can enjoy picnic areas, explore hiking, biking and equestrian trails and observe wildlife like red-tailed hawks, wild turkeys and barn owls.

Dining and shopping along McKee Road
“They have a lot of good restaurants in this area, and they have a Mexican supermarket,” says Du. The latter is Cardenas Markets at Capital Square Mall, not far from big-box stores like Target and Ross. Restaurants line major thoroughfare McKee Road, including authentic Mexican cantina Mendoza’s, an area staple for over 20 years that's still popular for its social atmosphere, handmade tortillas and happy hour specials like their craft michelada cocktail. Two miles northwest, the San Jose Flea Market features vintage treasures and handmade items from local vendors, as well as live music, and quick bites and drinks from food kiosks. For fresh produce, Du recommends the Berryessa Farmers’ Market, open on Saturdays from May through November, about 4 miles northeast.
