Why Luna Park appeals to buyers seeking quick commutes

Luna Park is a small, mostly residential San Jose neighborhood located near the Highway 101 and Interstate 880 interchange. Once the site of an early 20th-century amusement park, the area is now known for its variety of homes and central access. It’s not a destination for nightlife or events, but it appeals to buyers who want to stay near Downtown San Jose, job centers and transit options. The neighborhood is also well-connected to nearby commercial centers, from local dining to destination areas like Japantown.

What types of homes and prices you can find in Luna Park

The neighborhood mainly offers single-family homes from the mid-1900s, although some older properties from the early 20th century are still around. You’ll see ranch-style homes and bungalows along most roads, as well as more historic styles. “They aren’t your basic tract homes; you drive down these streets and see everything from Victorian to Craftsman styles,” says Diane Baty, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “People really care about and take great pride in their homes.” In the early 2000s, several townhouse and condo communities were built on the north side of the neighborhood. These two- or three-story homes usually have contemporary-style interiors and shared amenities.

Renters make up a majority of the neighborhood, but Luna Park’s homes are still popular among buyers. “People want this neighborhood – all the houses sell fairly quickly,” Baty says. Home prices usually range between the upper $700,000s and $1.5 million depending on a property’s size, age and condition. Many condos and townhouses also require monthly HOA fees.

Quick highway, transit and industrial access support daily commutes

Luna Park is home to and near many industrial companies, which offer local employment. The neighborhood is also a quick drive from San Jose’s largest job centers. Quick access to the Highway 101 and Interstate 880 interchange means commutes to downtown San Jose, North San Jose tech jobs and surrounding cities are quick and reliable. If you’d prefer not to drive, VTA bus stops are around, and the Civic Center light rail station is about 1 mile away. “Luna Park is in a very desirable location close to mass transit,” Baty says. “It’s centrally located for so many things, whether work or family.”

Explore limited local dining and bigger food scenes close by

While commercial options can be limited in the neighborhood, there are a few notable restaurants within walking distance of homes. These include:

  • Mariscos Costa Alegre, a colorful Mexican restaurant with a large outdoor seating area
  • Taqueria Lorena’s, a counter-service eatery also specializing in Mexican fare
  • Mesquite and Oak, a laid-back spot known for its slow-smoked brisket and southern-style sides
  • Maza, a beach-themed favorite for margaritas, seafood and brunch specials
Luna Park also isn’t far from Japantown’s walkable dining hub or downtown San Jose. In a 10-minute drive, you can explore bustling restaurant scenes, vibrant entertainment venues and popular attractions.

What traffic patterns and noise levels are like in Luna Park

Most interior residential streets are relatively quiet, especially compared to downtown-adjacent neighborhoods. However, traffic noise can increase closer to major roads. “It can be noisy around the highway and East Taylor Street with so many cars passing through,” says Realtor Olympia Pistalu with Compass. East Hedding Street, 10th Street and Oakland Road can also get congested during rush hours.
