César Chávez family home in Mayfair
As the location of César Chávez’s family home, Mayfair is an East San Jose neighborhood that honors its residents’ history and culture. “If you don’t live or work in the area, it’s easy to miss,” says Ruby Hidalgo, interim recreation supervisor with the Mayfair Community Center, who has worked there for seven years. "This is such an amazing place with a lot of culture.” Chávez and his family lived in the neighborhood from 1951 to 1953, about a decade before he founded the National Farm Workers Association, later renamed the United Farm Workers Union. The home is now owned by Amigos de Guadalupe Center for Justice and Empowerment, a nonprofit based in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish that provides housing, immigration and family services to the neighborhood and hopes to turn the home into a learning center that will educate visitors about Chávez’s community organizing and non-violent protests. The Mexican Heritage Plaza celebrates the neighborhood’s culture and hosts events throughout the year, including the Avenida de Altares. Residents can find restaurants along the East Santa Clara/Alum Rock Corridor, such as Hacienda Parrilla Bar. Alum Rock Elementary School District, which receives a C from Niche, and East Side Union High School District, which earns an A, serve the neighborhood.
Mexican Heritage Plaza blends arts and culture
Mayfair is home to the School of Arts and Culture Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza), which was built in 1999 on the site of one of the first grocery store boycotts that labor rights activist César Chávez organized. La Plaza is now a creative hub, teaching classes and hosting community events that center cultural connections to the arts. One such event is Avenida de Altares, an annual Día de Los Muertos celebration that features a curated altar walk that ends with festivities in the plaza, such as face painting, a cemetery installation and vendors displaying their art. La Plaza is currently fundraising for La Avenida, an extension of its creative hub that will include a black box theatre and a cafe.
Alum Rock Corridor borders Mayfair
The East Santa Clara/Alum Rock Corridor, locally known as “the corridor,” is lined with stores and restaurants. Mariscos La Costa specializes in seafood, while Hacienda Parrilla Bar serves an array of traditional Mexican dishes, including empanadas and fried mojarra. Hidalgo enjoys the Pizza Box, which sits near the interstate. “It’s a good little hole-in-the-wall place,” she says. Locals can get groceries from Bills Market or Lucky 7 Supermercado. Home Depot is at the top of the neighborhood, Walmart is about a 2-mile drive, and Target is 5 miles away.
Ranch-style homes common in Mayfair
Cars are parked along the residential streets of Mayfair, even with filled driveways that break up the sidewalks. Ranch-style homes are found throughout the neighborhood, featuring small front yards decorated with tropical landscaping. These mid-20th-century properties, often fenced-in, can cost between $800,000 and $975,000. There are some new traditional houses throughout the area, with stucco or vinyl exteriors and trim accents, which were built between the 1990s and the early 2000s. Prices for these tend to fall between $1 million and $1.1 million.
Mayfair Park is home to community center and garden
Mayfair Park sits in the middle of the neighborhood and encompasses the park, the Mayfair Community Center and the Mayfair Community Garden. “People might find themselves at the park for a variety of reasons,” Hidalgo says. Amenities include a skate park and playground, and it is often used by the community center during their after-school programs and camps. The Mayfair Pool is also on the grounds of the community center and offers competitive and recreational swimming throughout the summer. Residents can rent a plot at the community garden every year to grow their produce. “It’s managed by volunteers,” Hidalgo says. Emma Prusch Farm Park’s preserved farmlands include orchards, animals and community gardens that people can explore, and hosts a slew of summer camps, farmers markets and agricultural classes.
Mayfair students start at San Antonio Elementary
As part of the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District, Mayfair students can start at San Antonio Elementary School, which receives a C-plus. Next, they can attend the Renaissance Academy at Mathson, which scores a B-minus. Independence High School, which earns an A and is part of the East Side Union High School District, offers three California Partnership Academies. These include the Space Technology Engineering Academy Magnet, which focuses on pre-engineering and design.
Mayfair residents travel by bus and car
The Valley Transportation Authority offers several bus stops along King Road and Alum Rock Avenue, carrying passengers throughout San José. With Interstate 68 running along the top of the neighborhood, many residents also drive themselves. The San José Mineta International Airport is about 6 miles away, and it services more than 40 nonstop flights to international and U.S. destinations. The nearest emergency room is about 1 mile outside of Mayfair at the Regional Medical Center.
