San Mateo Highlands
Largest Eichler home community
Built in the 1950s, the Highlands is the largest planned community built by Eichler, who became well-known for his distinctive mid-century modern style inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. He built thousands of stylish homes in the Bay Area and greater Los Angeles between 1956 and 1964, including the flat-roofed and A-frame ranch homes most typically found here throughout the Highlands neighborhood. “That style of home tends to attract creative types and tech workers who commute to San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose. You've got large lots and great views,” says Realtor Glenn Sennett of Coldwell Banker, who lives and works in the neighborhood. While the majority of homes featuring Eichler or similar mid-century architectural styles, there are few other contemporary homes mixed into the neighborhood’s residential landscape. Most homes are one-level, which is common for mid-century styles. However, some homes have been updated to include two levels. Residing on tree-lined streets, the properties feature larger lots and many of the houses back up to the lush green open space adjacent to the 280 freeway and across from the Crystal Springs Reservoir. Housing prices in the Highlands start around $2 million and can go up to $4.5 million for more updated properties featuring luxury interior amenitiesTop-rated public schools
The neighborhood is zoned for some of the best public schools in San Mateo. Students can go to Highlands Elementary School followed by Borel Middle School, which both get an A-minus rating from Niche. The A-plus-rated Aragon High School is ranked the #1 best high school in San Mateo and offers a unique AVID program. Students in the program can take elective college-prep courses on topics including organizational skills, time management and college essay writing. For a private school alternative, students can attend the Odyssey School, a middle school where students often graduate to prestigious college prep academies.Hiking trails and a neighborhood recreation center
The Highlands Recreation Center, located in the heart of the neighborhood, offers glimmering swimming pools, fitness rooms, sports courts and a playground. “The center is specifically for the Highlands neighborhood, so it’s a huge draw for residents,” Wachter says. East of the Highlands is Laurelwood Park, where residents can hike or bike along interconnected trails that traverse hilly, rugged terrain. Spanning 225 acres and surrounded by grand trees and wildflowers, it’s the largest park in San Mateo and is a common spot for deer and other wildlife sightings. A few miles away is Crystal Springs Park, which borders the Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir. It offers a campsite and trail system with numerous resting benches along the trails to sit and take in the scenic waterside views.Local shopping centers and downtown offerings
Residents have easy access to Crystal Springs Village, a central shopping plaza for the area with a Safeway for grocery staples and other eateries. Dianda’s Bakery is an Italian pastry shop that’s been tantalizing taste buds in the Bay Area since 1962. For a night out, The Field Club mixes up unique cocktails and serves elevated pub-style fare. It serves a wide variety of baked goods, sweets and other treats that are freshly made each morning. The neighborhood’s favorite pizza and Mediterranean food spot is Rainbow Pizza on De Anza Boulevard, while Downtown San Mateo is five miles east for additional boutique shops, fine dining and grocery stores like Trader Joe’s.Community festivals in Downtown San Mateo
Residents can enjoy annual community events just a few miles away in Downtown San Mateo. SummerFest takes place each June, where the downtown streets turn into a festival atmosphere with food vendors, beer and wine gardens, live entertainment and arts and crafts activities. Each September, locals join together for the popular San Mateo Fall Fest, which brings in over 5,000 patrons for an outdoor autumn block party downtown. The event features local music performances, family-friendly activities, local food and fall-inspired craft beer and ciders. Two main thoroughfares for commuting
The Highlands is just minutes away from Interstate 280 and Route 92, both major Bay Area transportation corridors, making it an excellent place for commuters. The neighborhood is also located 17 miles from Palo Alto, 24 miles from downtown San Francisco and 34 miles from San Jose.
