San Mateo Park
Historic residences, tree-lined streets and a tight-knit community
San Mateo Park is filled with single-family homes from the 1910s through the 1930s on oversized lots and curving roads. The community’s nearly 70 landscaped traffic circles were initially used for horse-drawn carriages and were planted with trees from the 1915 San Francisco World Fair. Spacious front lawns and privacy hedges separate many houses from the streets, while backyards can have swimming pools or tennis courts. The area has a mix of original and remodeled Colonial Revivals, Craftsman bungalows, Queen Annes and Spanish Revivals. The San Mateo Park Neighborhood Association works to maintain and improve the historic area through horticulture education, volunteer opportunities and community events. Every homeowner is part of the association, which gives the neighborhood a tight-knit feel, and generally the area is low on crime. The community has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10 or half the national average of 4. Homes here sell for a median price of $4 million after three weeks, although the range begins around $2.25 million and continues to $6 million for residences on half-acre lots.Nearby schools with wide-ranging academic programs
Children in the neighborhood can attend C-plus-rated San Mateo Park Elementary School and A-minus-rated Borel Middle School. A-plus-rated San Mateo High School works with Skyline College to provide dual enrollment credits for students in biotechnology, food service and hospitality courses.Surrounded by trees and recreational options
Green spaces surround San Mateo Park. Just over in Burlingame, Pershing Park has a large basketball court, a playground and shaded picnic tables. Just north of the community in San Mateo, Martin Luther King Jr. Park has a multi-use field with markings for soccer and baseball. The adjacent community center has two swimming pools, a kendo dojo, a playground and basketball courts. Just off of El Camino Real, San Mateo Central Park is an expansive space with a myriad of activities. In addition to a recreation center and tennis courts, the park has rose, Japanese and fairy gardens. There’s an off-leash area for dogs, and kids can explore the playground, take a miniature train ride or feed fish at the Koi pond. Golfers have nearby options, too. The members-only Burlingame Country Club is just west of San Mateo Park and has a swimming pool, a clubhouse and tennis and pickleball courts.Less than a mile to shopping centers and diverse eateries
The neighborhood has no shopping or dining, but plenty can be found less than a mile away in Burlingame. Safeway and Mollie Stone’s Markets provide fresh produce, organic meats and pantry staples. The commercial corridor along Burlingame Avenue has everything from pharmacies to clothing stores to a diverse array of restaurants. Sapore Italiano Ristorante makes its pasta by hand and serves its cuisine in the eatery’s elegant interior or outdoor patio. Rasoi is a modern Northern Indian restaurant known for its clay-oven-roasted Tandoori dishes and vegetarian options. Stella provides an Alpine inn atmosphere for its rustic Italian dishes like Osso Buco and gnocchi.A variety of local worship centers
Built in 1910, the San Mateo Buddhist Temple is an inclusive space that hosts community events including Japanese language and calligraphy classes and movie nights. The Chabad North Peninsula synagogue provides Jewish education to all ages through hands-on learning. Masjid Ul Haqq was founded in 1982 and offers after-school programs and family nights for the community. Numerous Protestant and Catholic churches are also within 3 miles of the neighborhood.Traveling the peninsula and beyond
El Camino Real is San Mateo Park’s main roadway. It borders the neighborhood’s eastern edge and eventually becomes part of Interstate 280 near San Francisco. The community rests between Highway 101 and Interstate 280, making journeying up and down the peninsula convenient. Bus stops are dotted along El Camino Real. Sidewalks are sporadic throughout the neighborhood, although that doesn’t stop people from taking strolls alone or with their dogs. Travelers can also use the Caltrain station in nearby Burlingame, with lines running to San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose. San Francisco International Airport is only 6 miles north of the neighborhood, and the nearest hospital, Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, is three miles away.
