State and federal lands make up Sandyston Township
On the west side of Kittatinny Ridge in Sussex County, New Jersey, rural Sandyston Township is surrounded by greenery and state lands near the Pennsylvania border. "It's a unique spot in New Jersey," says Mayor George B. Harper, Jr., a lifelong resident. "It's a really small community with a lot of community spirit."
Sandyston's location -- 55 miles from Newark and 66 miles from New York City -- helps this community of mainly protected land remain a lush and wild forested landscape. “Sandyston is truly a nature lover’s paradise,” says Realtor Mildred Di Iorio of eXp Realty. “From the scenic hiking trails in the Delaware Water Gap to the fishing and camping opportunities at Stokes State Forest, the area offers countless ways to enjoy the outdoors. It's perfect for those looking to get away from it all and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature.” The nearest commercial center and the Sussex County seat is 16 miles away in Newton.
Hiking and fishing in Stokes State Forest
"We have a lot of fish and game lands," says Harper. "So, a lot of hunting and fishing, that's what most of our tourism is. It supports our economy. All public land is open to fishing and hunting." In Stokes State Forest, within Sandyston, hikers can take in the views from Sunrise Mountain while birders watch the hawk migration during the spring and fall. Stokes also offers trails for hiking, skiing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and more. Also within the township is the Hidden Acres Golf Course, an 18-hole course where baseball legend Babe Ruth once played. The renowned pitcher and his friend, Yankees pitcher Russ Van Atta, would play golf, hunt and fish in Sandyston, closing the day with a drink at Gyp's Tavern in Branchville, 5 miles away.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, 10 miles away, offers hiking, biking, boating and more along the Delaware River. Within the National Recreation Area sits Millbrook Village, a restored 1800s town born from a grist mill. Visitors may tour the area and explore a few of the old homes. For modern architecture, Luna Parc, home of artist Ricky Boscarino, is a museum and a cabinet of curiosities, displaying colorful exteriors and mosaiced interiors adorned with the artist's various collections. "Absolutely one of a kind," says Harper. "Almost a small amusement park, but it's his home. Twice a year, he has an open house."
Stony Lake is known for its large population of trout fish during fishing season.

Active recreation committee
In August, the Sandyston Township Fire Department hosts a tractor parade. "The whole town turns out," says Harper. "This year, we had 160 tractors in the parade, and we have a 7-mile route, and everyone has a party on their lawn." The volunteer fire department hosts several events throughout the year, including a barbecue and a Santa Parade in December. The Sandyston Township Recreation Committee also holds events. "The recreation commission is very active," says Harper. "A real pride of our community." The committee plans the Gobble Hobble, a popular 5K run to celebrate the fall season. Religious services are held at Delaware Valley United Methodist Church, St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church and Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church.

Township to remain bucolic
Roadways lined with homes and stretches of farmland weave through the township. Most houses sit on large, manicured lots or are part of a farm. Farmhouse, cottage, Colonial Revival and ranch-styles are common and range from $205,000 to $580,000. Sandyston is not an expanding area. "We're never going to be developed to any great degree," says Harper. "Because over 75% of lands are already in state or federal hands. We have over 1,000 acres of preserved farmland, and I don't think we'll see any of the kind of growth that's happened elsewhere."

"Peters Valley School of Craft, that is a gem in our township. It's an independent craft school on federal property," says Harper. "And people come from all over to study crafts from blacksmithing to weaving." The school teaches makers of all levels in various trades and allows students to exhibit and sell their work at exhibitions and craft fairs.
