South Coast
South Coast Plaza and shopping and dining on Bristol Street
The biggest draw is South Coast Plaza. With more than 275 shops and restaurants it is the largest shopping mall on the West Coast. Here, people will find numerous upscale shops and restaurants from Saks Fifth Avenue to Din Tai Fung. Tuesday Figueroa, a Realtor with Realty One Group Anaheim, describes a versatile mix with something for everyone. “There are high-end retailers like Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada,” she says. “Then literally across the street, there’s The Container Store and HomeGoods, which is where you may find me.” This major mall gave rise to The Lab Anti-Mall, another small shopping center next to South Coast Plaza. The center is home to shops like Urban Outfitters and Hana Re, a Michelin-recommended restaurant.Other plazas, like Bristol Place and Bristol Plaza, dot the neighborhood and include places like Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Target, and other big box stores. The area is also full of restaurants. Figueroa recommends Wang Cho, an all-you-can-eat Korean Barbecue restaurant and The Blackbear Diner, a rustic chain founded in California that serves American comfort classics.
Convenient highway access for commuters
“It’s a really good central location,” says Jose Samano, a real estate agent with Real Brokerage Technologies. “You’re near major freeways and the airport, so it’s good for commuters, but the South Coast Metro area is an employment center itself.” CA-55 and Interstate 405 are a couple of miles south of the neighborhood, providing expedited routes north to Garden Grove, Orange and Anaheim and south to Huntington Beach. John Wayne Airport is 3 miles southeast. Most residents drive, as the neighborhood is not generally walkable. The city bus also circulates in the neighborhood.Midcentury Modern homes in South Coast
While South Coast is known for its business centers, back from the retail corridors sits quieter residential streets. The neighborhood was mostly developed during the midcentury, so most residential properties are comprised of the era’s distinctive low-pitched roofs and clean lines. Samano says first-time and established buyers have options in South Coast. First-time buyers generally gravitate to the neighborhood’s numerous condos. These properties, generally settled in condo communities that offer their own amenities like a pool or tennis court, sell from $300,000 to $625,000. Most residents living in single-family homes are established buyers interested in moving on from their starter homes. The neighborhood’s midcentury homes sell for between $885,000 and $1.2 million.School offers program for students who are deaf and hard of hearing
Depending on where they live in South Coast, kids can start school at Taft Elementary School, graded C by Niche. Taft Elementary School serves kids from kindergarten through sixth grade and is home to the Taft Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. The program enables its students to access the curriculum through accessible modes of communication while still accessing the California Standards for Academic Performance. From grades seven through twelve, kids can attend Saddleback High School. The six-year school earned a B from Niche and offers an International Baccalaureate program.Visiting Bomo Koral Park
Bomo Koral Park occupies 10 acres of green space in central South Coast. In addition to a playground and multipurpose field, the park offers a baseball diamond for youth sports games. The park is also a favored spot for runs or jogs in the neighborhood. The neighborhood is only a few blocks from two more parks: Lillie King Park and Carl Thornton Park. Kids can play on the playground at the small neighborhood Lillie King Park. At Carl Thornton Park, people can meet up for games at one of the basketball or fitness courts. The small lake is a popular outdoor vista.
