A haven for nature lovers in southern Utah
Surrounded by red rocks and scenic hiking trails, Santa Clara is the outdoorsy neighbor to the larger city of St. George, offering a quieter way of life with convenient access to the metropolitan area. "Even though it neighbors St. George and a lot of people wouldn't be able to tell that it's a different city, it's a really cute, eclectic town," says Julia DeMarce, an agent with eXp Realty, who has sold homes in Santa Clara. "It has a small-town feel. The community is really close-knit. They have a fresh farm stand that people are really familiar with." Santa Clara was founded in the 1860s by Jacob Hamblin, a missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Swiss settlers moved in, and the city grew on the outskirts of St. George. Now home to around 8,500 people, Santa Clara is full of quiet subdivisions, a few small farms and some local businesses. Proximity to the natural beauty of southwestern Utah is one of the main perks of life here, with nature reserves, state parks and national parks all within reach.

Exploring the red rocks of southwestern Utah
Santa Clara residents have plenty of natural recreation in and around the city. There are several hiking trails in the Santa Clara River Reserve in the city's southern end. Red Cliffs National Conservation Area has plenty more trails north of the city, including in Red Mountain, which towers above the region. Nearby state parks include Gunlock, Snow Canyon and Sand Hollow, Utah's most visited state park. Sand Hollow is a large lake popular for boating, fishing, camping and driving off-highway vehicles through the desert sand dunes. The Zion Canyon Visitor Center at Zion National Park is about 46 miles east of town. Within Santa Clara, city parks offer recreation like baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a BMX track and playgrounds. Black Desert Resort is a public golf course in the city’s north end that hosts PGA events.

Just north of the city, the Tuacahn Center for the Arts hosts performances at its indoor and outdoor amphitheaters, including Broadway musicals and concerts from various genres. The outdoor setting is nestled into the cliffs of Padre Canyon, providing a scenic backdrop during the performance. The annual Swiss Days festival celebrates the city’s early Swiss settlers with events like a parade, pioneer craft demonstrations, a car show and a free concert.
Suburban homes in the Utah desert
Santa Clara is a largely suburban city, with neighborhoods like Santa Clara Heights featuring new traditional homes on quiet streets. Sidewalks and mature trees add to the neighborhood feel. Other housing styles include late 20th-century ranch-style houses and modern contemporary homes. There is a good amount of Mediterranean architecture in the city as well. While most of the houses are close together, it is possible to find properties with spacious lots for recreation or large gardens. The median home price is around $592,000, down 2% over the past year. That price point is higher than the median in St. George but slightly lower than in the nearby city of Ivins.

Commuting around southwestern Utah
Santa Clara is not a very walkable city, so most people drive to get around. Cycling is possible with bike lanes on major roads like Santa Clara Drive and Canyon View Drive. The city is about a 6.5-mile drive into Downtown St. George via Sunset Boulevard and Bluff Street. The SunTran bus system has two routes that pass through Santa Clara, also connecting the city to St. George and Ivins. St. George Regional Hospital is about 7 miles east of town, while St. George Regional Airport is about 19 miles away.
Climate and crime factors in Santa Clara
Santa Clara has average high temperatures of 28 degrees in the winter and 101 degrees in the summer. The city gets just eight inches of annual precipitation, far below the national average. Because of these dry conditions, wildfires pose a risk to life in Santa Clara. The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands has several wildfire resources on its website. Despite little rainfall, the Santa Clara River has had significant floods. Mitigation measures implemented after a 2005 flood have prevented similar disasters since.
The Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department provides law enforcement for the two cities. In 2023, the department saw a 57.6% increase in violent crimes, up from 11 to 26. Property crimes rose by 24%, from 57 to 75. Despite these increases, both rates are significantly below the national average.

Among the stunning landscapes of Southern Utah, Santa Clara Heights rises above the rest with hilltop views of nearby red rock formations, mountains and the desert. This residential neighborhood rests one mile north of downtown Santa Clara and seven miles from St. George. The community is part of one of the oldest towns in the region and was founded in 1854 by Jacob Hamblin, a missionary for Brigham Young. Now known as the ‘Garden Spot’ of Washington County, the steadily growing neighborhood is near lava fields and the Santa Clara River, making it especially attractive to outdoor enthusiasts. “Santa Clara Heights is a desirable community with unique properties and scenic views. It’s not cookie-cutter. There are established, older homes but new ones, too. It’s spread out, and it’s one of the only places in the area where you get big trees,” says JD Reese, a Realtor with Red Rock Real Estate with nearly a decade of experience.
Santa Clara Heights doesn’t have shopping and dining options in the community, but plenty of both are just outside the boundaries. One mile northwest, Royal Thai Cuisine Express 89 features an array of Thai dishes, including seven different kinds of curry. A few blocks down, Mo’Bettahs is a regional chain formed in Bountiful, Utah. The owners wanted to bring Hawaiian cuisine to the area, and now locals can have authentic Kalua pork or Pulehu chicken six days a week. Harmons Grocery-Santa Clara is just across the parking lot from Mo’Bettahs and offers cooking classes in addition to produce, meats and pantry items. Frei’s Market is a beloved produce stand founded in 1956 at the southern end of the neighborhood. Slightly further down West Sunset Boulevard, shopping centers like Dixie Sunset Plaza and The Shops at Green Gate Village are within five miles of Santa Clara Heights.
Canyon View Park has a large playground with climbing equipment and a baseball field. There’s even a scavenger hunt with ten clues and objects hidden throughout the space. Swiss Pioneer Memorial Park is centrally located in Santa Clara. It features a wooden jungle gym and play equipment covered by a large canopy and picnic areas surrounded by the nearby hills. Archie H. Gubler Park is one of the largest green spaces in St. George. The sports park has five standard baseball fields and two Little League fields, in addition to a playground and pickleball courts. The Lava Flow Trail runs to the north of the community. The paved 2.3-mile trail is meant for cyclists and hikers of all skill levels.
Well-maintained houses, large lots and quiet streets make Santa Clara Heights a popular place to be. Homebuyers can choose from ranch-style homes, contemporary designs and Spanish-inspired residences among winding roads and cul-de-sacs. “Santa Clara Heights is popular with locals because it’s less congested than some nearby areas. It’s more laid-back, less commercial, and it’s a great place to raise a family. People move in and want to stay there, so there are generational purchases from one family member to another,” says Brian Hickman, a Realtor and associate broker with Realty Executives of Southern Utah and more than 20 years of experience. “There are a lot of ramblers with basements, but different sections of the neighborhood were built at different times. Some are still being built.” Homes sell for a median price of $533,000 after 55 days on the market, although the entire price range is more extensive. Ranch-style houses range from $470,000 to $670,000, while contemporary homes range from $850,000 to $1.8 million.
