Commuter suburb with Santa Fe Rail Runner access
Around 4 miles south of Downtown Santa Fe, the small, suburban Candlelight offers easy access to Saint Francis Drive, the Zia Road Rail Runner Station and Santa Fe Rail Trail. “The big selling point we see here is that it’s a great area for commuters,” says Daniel Huberman, who grew up around the area and continues to sell homes there as a Realtor with Santa Fe Realty Unlimited. “You can ride the Rail Runner all the way to Albuquerque for work or play, and you can take your bike on the Rail Trail to downtown nearby.” Candlelight was developed between the 1970s and '80s, so homes here are in a sweet spot between the centuries-old structures of the Historic Eastside and the newer custom builds of the Southeast Corridor. “You don’t have to deal with all the sewer line and historic district issues in the older parts of town, but you also don’t have the more contemporary look of the newer homes further south,” Huberman explains.
With easy access to transportation around the city, Candlelight is a great spot to call home.

Area-new Santa Fe-style homes
Set along quiet, sidewalk-lined streets, homes in Candlelight rest on manicured lawns studded with cottonwood and juniper trees. All are Santa Fe-style homes from the 1970s and ‘80s, which for Huberman is a golden age for development in the city. “The whole neighborhood gets to benefit from the Santa Fe-style facades without all the upkeep and expenses that can come with a historic house,” Huberman explains. Shared features include earth-tone stucco exteriors, flat roofs with red-tile overhangs and attached garages. These homes also come in one- and two-story layouts. One-story homes range from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet, and prices range from $425,000 and $665,000; two-story homes range from 2,000 to 3,000 square feet and cost between $525,000 to $815,000.

Neighborhood parks and Rail Trail access
The 6-acre Candelero Park sits in the community’s center, featuring a basketball court and playground with age-appropriate equipment. Less than a mile west, Ragle Park spans over 38 acres along Zia Road, featuring baseball and softball fields, play structures and paved trails that weave throughout the park’s amenities. “I walk my dog there all the time for a little bit of exercise, and it’s been a great place to teach my kids how to ride a bike without worrying about them wandering onto the street,” Huberman says. The 15-mile Santa Fe Rail Trail also runs along Candlelight’s eastern edge between the Santa Fe Railyard to the north and Lamy to the south. “You can just say you’re going on the bike trail here, and everyone will assume you’re talking about the Rail Trail,” Huberman explains. Murals and statues stud the sides of the trail, including the Johnathan Thompson-designed Peter Pan’s Labyrinth within the neighborhood.
