Stamm-designed suburb in Midtown Santa Fe
Around 3 miles west of the Santa Fe Plaza, Casa Alegre is an established Midtown suburb surrounded by eateries, community gardens and public schools. “You’re close to downtown, but you’d never need to go there, when you can just walk to local cafes, breweries and other conveniences in the neighborhood,” explains Julie Turner, a Realtor with Realty One Group Concierge, who’s sold homes in the area. Casa Alegre — which means “Happy Home” in Spanish — was designed by the famous architect Allen Stamm, who was known for building sturdy, well-made homes for the working people of Santa Fe. “I’ve sold a number of properties built by him, and people are always happy with their old, hardwood floors and vigas,” explains Chris Webster, a Santa Fe local and the CEO of Webster Enterprises. “They have a true, authentic Santa Fe feel.”
Casa Alegre keeps its historic charm without sacrificing amenities and residents love it.

Colorful, midcentury Santa Fe-style homes
The two- to four-bedroom Santa Fe-style homes here are laid out on a grid, surrounded by mature desert plantings; yellow-flowered chamisa bushes push through cracks in the aged sidewalks. Most homes were designed by Stamm and built between the late 1940s and early ‘60s, and while common features include radiant hardwood floors, exposed beams called vigas and traditional kiva fireplaces, some also have colorful stucco exteriors and molding. “I had a client ask if she needed to paint over all the turquoise and green painting she had added to her home," Turner says, "and I told her absolutely not, because it so captures the spirit of Santa Fe.” Lots range from 6,000 to 11,000 square feet, and are studded with sheds and garden spaces, hidden from street view behind adobe walls and chain link fences. Prices range from $425,000 to $875,000, depending on lot size and bedroom count.
Homes around Casa Alegre typically are single story floor plans.

The College Plaza Shopping Center here is home to a Smith’s grocery store and Jambo Café, where the Caribbean and African menu includes mahi-mahi wrapped in banana leaves, and slow-cooked ox tail. Artisan Santa Fe has been the city’s go-to art supply store since 1975, offering over 50,000 art-related items and hosting workshops that range from painting to stained glass work. Rowley Farmhouse Ales, locally known as the RFA, is fashioned after a barn and strung with carnival lights, serving bar snacks like chile fries and in-house sours like the plum-flavored Grimace.

Midtown Santa Fe's rising arts scene
Immediately south of Casa Alegre, the 63-acre Midtown Campus is being transformed into the city’s newest arts district by the Santa Fe Art Institute and Midtown Arts and Design Alliance. The Midtown Campus was originally designed to be a center of higher education in Santa Fe, but after several colleges opened and closed here, many of the area's buildings have since been left vacant. The Visual Arts Center’s office and gallery spaces are planned to be expanded and used collectively by 15 creative non-profits, including Youth Works and Community Arts and Design. The City of Santa Fe is also investing $500,000 into revamping the historic black-box Greer Garson Theatre here, hoping to turn its 100-seat movie room into a major attraction.
Casa Alegre is home to the locally owned and popular among locals, Artisan Art Supplies.

Community gardens, neighborhood parks and open spaces
Casa Alegre sits in the middle of the Santa Fe Pollinator Trail — the Xerces Society’s project to provide habitats for pollinators across the city — surrounded by greenspaces and community gardens. Two of the latter can be found in the tiny Maclovia and Cielo Vista parks, filled with cutting flowers and green chiles. The larger Gregory Lopez Park features a multi-purpose field dotted with cottonwood trees. The 16-acre Frenchy’s Field, immediately north of Casa Alegre, once had a community garden before the area’s prairie dogs took it over; now, the dairy farm-turned park features natural desert spaces, rock labyrinths, and the paved pathways of the 10-mile Santa Fe River Trail. Along Casa Alegre’s eastern edge, the 16-acre Ashbaugh Park features paved and dirt-packed trails that wrap around its sprawling open field.
