Historic farming village between Santa Fe and Los Alamos

Located about 20 miles from both Santa Fe and Los Alamos, Cuyamungue Grant forms the southern, more arid half of Cuyamungue Village, a Hispanic agricultural community in the Pojoaque Reservation. Area-low housing prices and easy access to Highway 285 attracts commuters. “It’s a great area if you work at the Los Alamos Laboratory but want to be near Santa Fe, as it’s right in the middle between both cities,” says Nalini Sosa, a Santa Fe local and Associate Broker with Barker Realty. The Tewa Indians first inhabited Cuyamungue between the 1300s and 1500s, after which Spanish settlers began farming fruit and vegetables along the Rio Tesuque. Today, Cuyamungue Grant is still home to sprawling ranches and Hispanic-owned businesses like Gabriel’s of Santa Fe, not far from indigenous monuments like those at Bandelier National Park.

Northern New Mexican ranches with sprawling lots

Cuyamungue Grant’s multi-acre properties sprawl along both sides of Highway 285, amid high desert scenery. Those to the west are on Pojoaque Off-Reservation Trust Land, while most to the east are within the Nambe Pueblo; homeowners in both areas are subject to that reservation's rules. Northern New Mexico-style homes built between the 1970s and early 2000s dominate the area, featuring pitched metal roofs, bright stucco exteriors and white wood molding; many are compounded, meaning they have additional, smaller homes called casitas on their lots. Most sit on lots of one to three acres, which locals use for horse stables and small-scale farming; home prices range from $400,000 to $795,000, depending on their lot size.

High desert monuments and natural spaces

Vast desert spaces and parks surround Cuyamungue, many with ancient Native American monuments and archaeological sites. “You have some of Northern New Mexico’s best parks within two hours of you, with Bandelier National Park to the west and Nambe Falls to the east,” Sosa says. Around 11 miles east, Nambe Falls' tiered waterfalls descend from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Hikers can swim in the park’s cool waters or climb the quarter-mile Dry Trail to get views of the waterfalls. Bandelier National Park sits 26 miles west, stretching over 30,000 acres of desert hills. On top of the countless tall rock spires here, ancient Pueblo petroglyphs and dwellings can be found in the tall sandstone mounds.
