A private master-planned community surrounded by mountain vistas and nature trails
Set amid the Sangre De Cristo foothills, the upscale master-planned community of Monte Sereno blends mountain vistas with luxury living, less than 6 miles from the Santa Fe Plaza. “Monte Sereno has the very best views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the entire city, which is what everyone’s after in Santa Fe," says Paige Cochran, an Associate Broker with Keller Williams Realty and Santa Fe local. "But the main thing about Monte Sereno is that you get the privacy, the luxury and the sheer size of the homes,” Despite its exclusive feel, Monte Sereno connects directly to Highway 84 for easy access to the City Different's downtown, the Santa Fe Opera and more. “Monte Sereno is conveniently close to the heart of Santa Fe," says Emily Medvec, a Santa Fe local and Associate Broker with EXP, "making it easy for residents to enjoy the city's rich cultural heritage, as well as its fine dining and vibrant arts scene.”

Modern Santa Fe-style homes and undeveloped lots
Monte Sereno’s sprawling Santa Fe-style homes are set on well-paved streets throughout the community, surrounded by juniper-piñon woodlands, mountain views and rugged terrain. “They're built into all the small ridges and hills of their lots to maximize privacy and views," Medvec says. "It makes developing out here challenging and expensive, but all the homes end up feeling like labors of love.”
Built in the late 1990s and 2000s on lots that range from 1 to 5 acres, these homes have sleeker, more contemporary designs than those in other Santa Fe neighborhoods; common features include stucco exteriors, manicured gravel gardens and exposed wooden beams called vigas. Most homes here have between two and four bedrooms on lots of up to 2 acres, and typically range from $1.6 million to $2.8 million; however, a hilltop mansion on over 5 acres with views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains can go for as much as $10 million. Open lots are also available for development, with prices heavily impacted by their views; an acre surrounded by hillsides and tall trees starts at $60,000, while an acre with direct views of the mountains can go for $600,000.
Large private lots with mountain views are among the most prevalent in Monte Sereno.

Private nature trails with mountain and opera views
Around 7 miles of private nature trails are woven into the Monte Sereno community, climbing up desert hills, descending into arroyos and crossing through juniper-piñon woodlands. Routes include the nearly half-mile Rufous Crest Loop, named for its sharp inclines, and the more than 2-mile Cholla Grande, which looks out to the Santa Fe Opera and Sangre De Cristo Mountains, and even Colorado on a clear day.
The Santa Fe Opera has international acts performing in the Monte Sereno neighborhood.
The Santa Fe Opera's summer shows
Less than a mile north, the Santa Fe Opera hosts performances throughout the summer season. “It’s an iconic venue because it’s all outdoors, so you can watch your show while looking out to the sunset over the Jemez Mountains,” Cochran says. “It’s got this really cool modern architecture, too, and they even do all their performances with modern sets, even if they’re classic operas.”
Nearby Downtown Santa Fe's foody scene
Downtown Santa Fe is less than 4 miles from the neighborhood. “Monte Sereno is only about 10 minutes from the Plaza, so all the city’s best restaurants are right there,” Cochran says. Set in a turquoise 16th-century hacienda, the Shed serves classic New Mexican fare at its laid-back cantina-style bar and central plaza. La Boca is run by the eight-time James Beard nominee Chef James Campbell Caruso, and specializes in Spanish and Mediterranean fine dining. Grocery stores like Sprouts Farmers Market and Market Street can also be found downtown at the DeVargas Center.

Highway 84 access and paved roads
U.S. Highway 84 forms Monte Sereno’s eastern border and leads about 6 miles south to Downtown Santa Fe. The community’s long, wide and freshly paved roads lack sidewalks, making them a challenge for pedestrians. However, Medvec says, “Having paved roads — especially in this northern part of Santa Fe —can be a big deal, because a lot of the time local roads are just dirt.” CHRISTUS Saint Vincent Regional Hospital is 13 miles south, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is under 8 miles southwest.
